I am interested in public librarianship and archival work not just because of my love of literature and old things (newspapers, photographs, weird decrepit road signs, etc) but also because of how libraries & archives empower communities. For the past few years, I have been volunteering with Chicago Books to Women in Prison. CBWP sends books from a 100% donated library to incarcerated people nationwide, focusing on women and trans/non-binary people.  Sadly, CBWP is not able to fully operate during this phase of the pandemic.

I don't know where I will be in five years but I hope I am working for an institution where I can uplift my community and preserve cultural memory. Maybe I will be a public librarian, or an archivist. I will likely still be in a city, maybe even closing in on my twentieth year in Chicago. After all, one of the reasons I chose Dominican is because of its proximity to the city. The online, asynchronous format, was also important for me. I am balancing obtaining my graduate degree with a full-time job, as I'm sure many of you are. 

I consider myself a die-hard Chicagoan, but I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. I am very passionate about the social justice work happening in rural and/or southern communities, and the work that still needs to be done in that part of the country. The friends I have made in Chicago are as special to me as the family I have back in Nashville--my dad, my brother, and my ninety-two-year-old Mimi--but it should be said that I love Dolly Parton and my cat above all else.  

I love to read across all genres and when I have time, I enjoy writing poetry. I also love television and I have an encyclopedic knowledge of the shows I consider favorites. Admittedly, this information is not particularly useful outside of the occasional bar trivia question. I'm kind of an indoor cat, but I do love spending time in Chicago's parks. I love to recommend books and shows to friends, and to find the perfect book to give them as a gift. I can also read your fortune.

My pet peeves are people who don't wear masks in crowded spaces and those rental electric scooters that descend on Chicago in the summertime.
