The Articles Of Confederation were made after the declaration of independence. This was our original constitution. America was desperate for a form of government since they were on their own now. The Articles Of Confederation was a document written to basically put a Government in place. However these Articles were very weak, essentially the American states acted like different countries instead of being united and one country. The states could have different currencies, policies, laws, and even slavery laws. This made America weak and divided.

Replacement of The Articles Of Confederation/New Constitution - March 4, 1789

This constitution that we still live by now was a replacement for the Articles Of Confederation. Since the Articles were weak and the Colonists saw how weak it was they sat down and decided to write a new document. They sat down for many days thinking of something to write. However, the Anti-Federalists didn't want to sign it because they didn't feel that the constitution gave enough rights to American Citizens and everyone. After the Anti-Federalists refused to sign it they added the bill of rights which added ten new amendments that give us free speech and freedom to do modern-day things we do today. This new constitution is very strong and we use it today.
