This year, we will be exploring the question: How does literature allow us to see our personal lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience?

Classroom expectations:
Students, read, write and engage in discussion daily.

Grading policy:
60%: Student practice (classwork, homework, discussion)
20%: Short assessments
20%: End of the unit assessments

IMPORTANT NOTE: All classwork and homework for the week must be turned in by Friday. Students will have alternate ways of showing understanding, but those classwork and homework assignments will not be accepted.

Unit Three: Spoken Word Poetry (in conjunction with the Atlantic Theater Company)
Unit Four: Fairy Tales and Folktales: The Universality of Story
Unit Five: Dystopian Fiction and Our World
Unit Six: Book Groups

Atlantic Theater Company

Our school has the great honor this year to work with the Atlantic Theater Company (ATC). The ATC program, Staging Success, will bring actors into our 10th grade ELA classes to guide us in building ensembles that together will create and produce a theatrical performance.

Together, we will study what matter is and the changes in matter. Throughout the year, we will discover what our world is made of, how it is put together, what happens when different parts of our world interact with each other, and why these things happen through various projects, labs, classwork, and assessments.

This course culminates in a State Regents exam on Friday, June 16th at 1:15 pm. Students must complete 25 labs (1200 minutes) in order to be allowed to sit for the Regents in June.

Since the earliest civilizations, humans have created community through shared beliefs, rituals, behaviors, and aspects of daily life. Since the earliest civilizations, humans have also liked to have fun. It is then not surprising that people have been creating and playing board games from the time of the Ancient Egyptians to the present day. In this elective course, we will look at the design of board games. What makes a board game appealing, interesting, and community-building? What components do board games share, and how do they differ? We will learn and play a variety of board games, analyze their characteristics, and together create and play our own board games.
