19th century a lot of advances were made in science, Stevenson refers to a lot of modern science in Dr Jekyll experiments which people hadn’t heard of and left them in awe. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution created a lot of controversy as it conflicted with teachings of the church. Stevenson uses his theory to raise questions in his book about humanity and natural world.
