Richard first appears to be a strong character and potentially someone who is able to be a leader of the group. Lou is scared of him and he presents a challenge to John Tate’s leadership. Although he stands up to John Tate (You shouldn’t threaten me John’ p17), he is eventually put in his place when John Tate turns the entire group against Richard by telling them to choose sides. (Act 1 Scene 3).

Richard is in need of guidance from a leader. Richard’s way of dealing with the situations that arise is to become sarcastic and to put others down.
Richard can be very negative and grumbles when given instructions by the leader. It could be argued that this is why he does not progress in the social hierarchy and Cathy does. Phil instructs Richard to take Brian to the police station but has to repeat his instructions to him

By Act 4 Scene 2 Richard appears to have taken the place of Leah as he sits in the field with Phil. His speech/ monologue takes the same structure as Leah’s. He seemingly talks about something unrelated to the group, attempts something physical to gain Phil’s attention (walking on his hands), then brings his thoughts back to the actual situation they are in by discussing what has happened to the group.

The plot of DNA by Dennis Kelly is explored using a mixture of short dramatised sequences, narration and talking head-style interviews with some of the key characters. The characters remain in role in the interview-style sequences, commenting on the developing plot of the play and explaining their views on the events and their role in what has taken place. The narrator explains the plot as some key moments are played out. The action sequences illustrate the three main settings through the use of symbolic elements designed to demonstrate the wood, the street and the field. Contains disturbing scenes which some younger viewers may find upsetting. Teacher review recommended prior to use in class.

The Monologue

In 2012 I was with a drama group called DFK and we actually performed DNA so ive been aware of the play for some years now, conveniently enough I actually played Richard back then aswell so I am familiar with the character. Richard has several small lines throughout the play but he closes the play at the end with a monologue that has a similar structure to the likes of Leahs. I had to go over it a couple of times but it was still sort of fresh in my head from performing it back in 2012. I done it a couple of time infront of Teresa and one note she gave me was that I had the same monotone throughout the monologue and that I need to act more as if I'm telling Phil (Peter) gossip and all of what he has missed in the group since everyone has split. This was good constructive critism as I feel that when I focus on my monotone more it makes the monologue less boring and more energetic. Another thing we looked at in rehearsals was rolling a cigarette half way through the monologue, however there was a few times in rehearsals I would forget to take out the pouch and roll the rollie, eventually Teresa decided that I didn't need to do it and that the monologue can go swiftly enough without having to do it.

Even though all of the characters are seen in the same uniform there are costume changes to be made and after them all the characters will have there own individual outfits to suit there character. N'eve and Ana were in charge of the costumes and they came up with my outfit idea. Ana told me she has this idea of Richard being a more upper class character and that he would be well dressed and presented. Ana told me to bring in a pair of jeans and a shirt and jumper for my costume changes.
I agreed with this and it actually gives me a better insight to how Ruchards physical appearance is.

I done quite abit of research on the play, the character and my own character. I looked into Dennis Kelly and some of his other work. While researching I found a video on youtube which I found to be very useful, it has different videos around the different characters. Each video focused on the characters personalities and traits and offers good information about your character which gives you a better depiction of your character.
Not only did this channel have videos on the character but it also had videos on theatre skills such as how to make a scene and other drama study tips. I found this channel to be very useful and if anyone studying drama needs information on the subject this is a good channel to check out.

Another thing I began watching was other theatre groups and companies take on the play itself. I found this useful as you get to see a lot of various styles and versions of the play from people younger and older than you. It also gives you good insight to the finished product of a learned and rehearsed play

I chose Richard as I have already played him in the past and I am familiar with his character, he has a personality that is easy to recreate on stage and I like his final monologue. I feel I played Richard well and not only that but I enjoyed playing him, I think he was the right role for me in the play but if I was to ever perform DNA again I would like to try out another character just to challenge my acting skills.

It also mention about an audition for the course and I feel that this monologue would be a great piece to perform for the audition
