Acevedo may have written this novel to send a message to other teens who are self conscious about themselves.      An example of this in the poem is when she says "It happens when I'm turning the corner. It happens when I forget to be on guard. It happens all the time." The tone in this portion or fact the whole poem is very gloomy and depressing. It says a lot about how objectifying women have been so normalized that it happens everywhere to everyone.
Another example in this poem is when it says "I should be used to it. I shouldn't get so angry when boys--and sometimes grown-ass men--talk to me however they want, think they can grab themselves or rub against me or make all kinds of offers." In this excerpt of the poem, it talks about how men near her would touch themselves as she passes them. We can infer that the men touch their private area to readjust. From the description, we can infer that she was very uncomfortable so we could characterize this as a very traumatizing experience.

She says many negative things like how people would call her names and would use derogatory language against her because of her appearance.
     The first few lines go something like " I am the baby fat that settled into D-cups and swinging hips so that the boys who called me a whale in middle school now ask me to send pictures of myself in a thong." From my understanding, this isn't really written in a positive or joyful tone. I think that Xiomara is felt like she isn't worth anything and that people only want her for her body. She probably feels objectified. The way this part has been written makes the poem deeper and it gives it meaning.
     Another example in this poem is "The other girls call me conceited. Ho.Thot. Fast. When your body takes up more than your voice you are always the target of well-aimed rumors." Here it shows what she faced like all the bullying ad name-calling and especially the slander being said about her. They called her a thot and a ho and a downright cocky person.
