         <description><![CDATA[<div>Athens had a democracy. Citizens had power, there was no decision maker/ruler. You had to be 18 years old to be a citizen. There was a council of 500, the council met everyday and ran the business of the government. <br><br>Sparta was an Oligarchy. 7 years old's had to train and work hard. Sparta was the leading army in the Mediterranean are until about 400 B.C.E.The council of the elders had 2 kings and 28 other men. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Athenian economy depended on trade. Athens was near the sea and could trade with other city-states. The coins were made out of gold, silver, and bronze. The Agora was like a Greeks farmer's market. <br><br>Sparta conquered neighboring regions, people living in them became slaves. Spartan slaves were called helots. Helots were allowed to live where they originally lived but had to give majority food to Sparta. Sparta used iron bars as money. Helots assigned to a particular plot farmed the land. They received some crops as wages and turned over the rest to the owner.  <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Athenians believed that producing good citizens was the main purpose of education. Since only boy could grow up to be citizens, boys and girls were taught differently. Athenians believed that having a good citizen should have both an intelligent mind and a healthy body.&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;Spartans believed that the purpose of education was to have capable men and women who could fight to protect the city-state. From the age of 7 all of the Spartan children trained for battle. Spartan boys lived and trained in barracks.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Treatment of Women and Slaves</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Citizenship was not possible for woman and slaves in Athens so they had fewer rights than free men. Athenian women could not inherit or own much property.&nbsp; Most Athenian women had most influence in the home. Slaves performed a wide variety of jobs in Athens, including tasks that required a great deal of skill.&nbsp;<br><br>Spartan women lived the same simple life as Spartan men.&nbsp; Like Spartan men women were expected to be strong and healthy and ready to fight when needed. Spartan women had many rights that other Greek women did not have. They were free to speak with their husbands' friends.Women could own and control their own property.</div>]]></description>
