Slavery first started in 1619 when a boat of 20 African Americans were brought to the British Colony of Jamestown, Virginia. During the 17th and 18th century slaves typically were just needed for picking cotton, gathering tobacco, and doing work in their owners plantations. Before the war according to History.com by 1850 America had over 4 million slaves which were treated like animals, they were forced to sleep in sheds, slave cabins, all places with zero sanitation and lots of health risks. Slaves were mistreated by their owners when they did not obey or made a mistake in a task that they received. They were whipped with whips, sticks, and some were even hung to die, if you were a female you could have also been sexually assaulted by your master. Without the Civil War, slavery could still possibly be occurring in present day and causing America to continue being in a huge torn mess. America was cut into sections dividing the United States in parts known as the Northern States and the Southern states, leaving some states with different laws that could mean the difference between life or death to some people. When the United States won the Civil War those 4 million slaves were finally set to freedom and gaining their own Civil Rights.

After the war the thirteenth amendment was created abolishing slavery in every state which meant all slaves were set to be free. Slaves were guaranteed to be given citizen and voting rights, this also allowed blacks to participate politically by having the right to be elected in any level of government. Slaves were then finally allowed to be in America without being held captive and sold like property. According to Memory.lok.gov One freedman, Houston Hartsfield Holloway, wrote,"For we colored people did not know how to be free and the white people did not know how to have a free colored person about them." Blacks AND whites were not accustomed to being treated equally and the majority of whites did not believe that blacks should have been treated the same way as white people were treated even if they had the same amount of money as a white upper class family. Even after many whites peaceful and not so very peaceful protests blacks were still given the opportunities and rights that they have been fighting for, for generations. They were finally allowed to stand up for what they believed without getting beat by their masters. Slaves of all ages went to schools and learned how to read and write which they were not allowed to do as slaves due to the fact that their owners were afraid that they would be able to escape or get in contact with people who could end up helping them escape to the North were they did not accept slavery allowing them to be somewhat free, but did not give them rights and if caught they could be brought back to their owners and get severely punished.

Before the war the United States was falling apart, it was divided into parts, the Northern and Southern states. The Northern states consisted of people who saw slavery as a bad and evil thing that should be banned and were involved in the abolitionist movement, but the Southern states consisted of people who believed slavery was mandatory and needed for slave owners. Even though most of the southerners didn't even own slaves they still supported slavery because it allowed them to get more jobs easily and giving whites more and better life opportunities. However after America won the war they unified as one to become what is now The United States of America allowing black slaves to have the same equal rights as a white person and giving blacks opportunities as well for educational purposes, starting their own businesses, or voting. The war didn't just help abolish slavery it also kept the United States from falling apart and prevent it to continue being split into different states with different laws.

Some people might say that the Civil War was not worth the cost if you think about the 620,000 lives that were lost during the war and those people that gave up their lives for no reason since they didn't win the war. However, those people did not just "give up their lives" they volunteered to fight for their rights and although it's sad it's also true that the southerners (and northerners) knew death would play a HUGE role when going to war and couldn't have just assumed that they were going to win and get their way (dying or not), death was necessary since the south surrendered in 1865 due to the amounts of deaths and bombs that were thrown during the war.
