Rather than creating artwork that is all the same, inspire students with an idea and let them generate art! Give them the freedom to be creative and trust they will remain engaged in the activity. 

Kay's Deadly Dozen (seen below) is an example of many different doodles that have been stereotyped to be the only way to draw that image. Try not to give students generic ideas of how to draw certain things.
