The effects of being too greedy can lead to dangerous and unsought consequences. When the ship was initially sinking, the sailors threw Pi onto the lifeboat with hopes of helping themselves survive. Though in the end, the sailors would be punished for their relenting greed by death. It is very likely that Pi saw himself in the sailor's position when Richard Parker was in the water. Letting Richard Parker drown would increase Pi's survival chances tremendously, though Pi's selflessness chose to value other living things over himself. Greed is necessary for survival, but having too much can lead to great punishments. When Pi reaches the floating island it is a miracle, a perfect second chance to save his life when he was at his lowest point. After staying awhile on the island he got a warning that the island was carnivorous, if Pi were to stay and greed his second chance he would be punished by death. "I preferred to set off and perish in search of my kind than to live a lonely half-life of physical comfort and spiritual death on this murderous island" (Martel 283). Understanding that the island was a second chance in the form of a miracle, Pi does not greed the comfort of the island until death.
