Il “log” nel gergo nautico del 1700 era un pezzo di legno che, legato a una fune con nodi equidistanti, veniva gettato in mare per misurare la velocità delle navi, tali rilevazioni venivano riportate su un libro di bordo chiamato “journal” e, per estensione “logbook”, o più brevemente “log”.
