We take care of patients that have been diagnosed with an upper gastrointestinal cancer, this would include oesophageal, stomach, pancreatic and Bile duct (known as cholangiocarcinoma).

We have produced this Padlet as a resource of useful information that we hope you will find helpful.

Occupational Therapy

Many patients who are faced with a cancer diagnosis report a reduction in quality of life and limitations in carrying out basic activities of daily living (ADLs). These limitations in function may be due to the cancer itself, but many are actually a result of treatment-related side effects. Cancer-related disability arises from these limitations. Occupational Therapy carries out a wide range of interventions following a comprehensive assessment. These are available via face to face appointments, video call or telephone call. Some of these may include:

• Assessments to support day to day function

• Provision of aids / adaptations

• Seating and wheelchair assessment

• Cushion assessment for management of pain or discomfort in sitting

• Fatigue Management / Anxiety Management

• Support with memory and cognitive difficulties

• Vocational Rehabilitation (returning to work / accessing employment)

Physiotherapists are experts in finding the best ways for cancer patients to be active, improve independence and enhance quality of life. This may involve exercise programmes or advice on everyday activities. With some cancers, research has shown that being active can reduce the risk of it coming back and increase your chances of surviving. Specialist physiotherapists can also help with problems and possible treatment side effects such as pain, fatigue and breathlessness. For cancer patients of working age, physiotherapy can help you gain enough strength and mobility to return to work.

Physiotherapists deal with human function and movement and help people to achieve their full physical potential. They use physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore wellbeing.

Speech and language Therapy

The ability to communicate and eat/drink without difficulty is something we often take for granted. Speech and language therapists support people experiencing difficulties swallowing, eating, drinking and/or communicating. These difficulties can arise from cancer, its treatment or a variety of other reasons.

Speech and language therapists at Velindre Cancer Centre work closely with people with cancer who experience difficulties with swallowing, eating, drinking and/or communication. We also support individuals with altered airways (i.e. tracheostomy tubes or laryngectomies). Common difficulties for individuals needing speech and language therapy input include:

Coughing or choking when eating and drinking
Feeling like food and drink is “getting stuck” in the throat or “going down the wrong way”
Difficulty chewing food or keeping food/drink in the mouth
Difficulty understanding what is said or losing the thread of conversations
Difficulty finding the right word or using the wrong word
Slurred, hesitant or stuttering speech
Voice problems, for example sounding hoarse, gruff, croaky or strained
Difficulty reading
Difficulty writing

We play an important role in the multidisciplinary team to ensure that care is tailored to individual needs and goals. This will include working with families, carers and third sector organisations, such as Macmillan or The Brain Tumour Charity. The overall aim of our input is to offer practical help with speech and language therapy needs and to enhance quality of life.

Living with uncertainty and cancer
A diagnosis and/or treatment of cancer can lead to a range of difficult feelings, which differ from person to person. You may worry about what will happen (uncertainty).
Even in the months and years following diagnosis and treatment, you may notice feeling unsure about many things: the future, how you will cope, your physical health and your loved ones.
This uncertainty can feel worrying and difficult to cope with. You may feel anxious and low. Sometimes we struggle with these feelings and things seem to get worse.

Who is the course for?
The course is for people who are coping with uncertainty following a diagnosis of cancer during treatment and afterwards.

Following illness or stress, people will very often be left in a state of imbalance, short of vital energy which can prevent the body and all its complex individual systems from functioning effectively.
Complementary Therapies can help restore the body's natural equilibrium and balance and when people are relaxed it is very much easier to cope with the everyday stresses and strains life throws at us.
How Complementary Therapies may be helpful:

Velindre Mindfulness App

We are so excited to share this brand new free app with you, which has been created by the Psychology team here at Velindre Cancer Centre and funded with the support of Michele Pengelly via the Welsh Carers Fund.

The App is deliberately non-cancer specific so that anyone can use mindfulness as a tool to manage stress and anxiety.

In particular, the App is really useful to help support patients through their cancer experience. Listeners will be guided through mindfulness exercises to help improve mental health and wellbeing and can be used before, during or after hospital treatment. There is also a relaxation element to the App which has been provided courtesy of the Occupational Therapy team here at Velindre.

Velindre encourages everyone to use the Mindfulness App.

Fatigue Management Group

Fatigue is often described as overwhelming and constant tiredness making it hard to cope with everyday life. It has been identified as one of the most common symptoms of cancer, preventing people leading a full and active life.

The Fatigue Management Group course runs once every 2 months at the Maggie's Centre in Cardiff (located on the premises of Velindre hospital) the sessions run between 13:00-15:00 and are face-to-face.
