In this scene, the commander has presented Alfons with a gift. A pistol that came with a difficult toll. If Alfons was ever to turn in the commander, he is requested to kill himself. I chose this because I’m confused as to why the Commander trusts Alfons to take his word and kill himself if he betrays the Commander, But he feels the need to remind him of the consequences that come with betraying the Hitler Youth.

But, she never sees the prisoner or the soul again. I chose this because it shows the lies and how nobody helped other victims the Holocaust.

“‘With a smile of satisfaction, without a trace of compassion, the SS men stood, looking like proud victors. Dealing terrible blows [with hard rubber clubs], they drove the boys into the bunker [to be killed]. The joy on the faces of the SS men was unbelievable. Had they never had any children of their own ever?’”

In this quote, a survivor of the Holocaust describes the expressions in SS officers faces as they lined boys up for gassing. I chose this because it shows the heartlessness of the officers. They new what was happening, but were so blinded by Hitlers poisoning beliefs that they didn’t stop and think of what they were doing.

I chose this quote because Doris doesn’t understand the seriousness and luck that the situation has. Her mother survived and she doesn’t show any sympathy or compassion for her. Helen has hoped and searched for her daughter and is greeted by someone who doesn’t enjoy being in her presence.
