"You don't understand a word I'm saying, do you?"
In this quote, the reader is first properly introduced to the idea that the persona is speaking to someone in the last stanza as the last line. The use of the rhetorical question may be ironic as the person he may be speaking to (authority or psychologist) could understand it but shows his understanding of the absurdity of his actions and his crimes.

"The most unusual thing I ever stole? A snowman."
Partially introduced to speaking to someone, or possibly to himself. Stealing a snowman has no physical value, however, it has emotional value and inflicts emotional pain and this is striking as it can be seen as cynical to inflict emotional pain on children. He also sees the snowman as a friend as he is neglected by society and the snowman's temporary life may show temporary friendships he may have had. He understands his actions are "unusual" but continues to accept it.

"Sometimes I steal things I don't need."
Though he may steal things in order to have money as related to the time period, this may relate to is psychotic behavior as he enjoys and continues to want to inflict emotional pain and take things from people that have emotional and personal value. This behavior is known as kleptomania, where a person has urge to steal items that miht be useless and have no physical value but do it on order to inflict negative emotions.

"Better off dead than giving in, not taking/what you want."
he's dependant on stealing
stealing relieves the narrator's lack of emotion. "giving in" to what? pressures of life? insecurities? having a friend? maybe they're too scared of being hurt and have trust issues so they isolate themselves from others but they're desperate and long for company.

"I wanted him, a mate/with a mind as cold as the slice of ice/within my own brain."
simile. emotional coldness and disconnection. He's personifying the snowman - giving him male characteristics because they want "a mate" or at least someone to talk to. They're desperate for some sort of emotional connection. Everyone is cold and temporary. "wanted" - past tense, possessive verb that emphasises the desperation. could this suggest they are aware of their odd behaviour?

"I stole a guitar and thought I might/learn to play"
He wants to fill the void of emptiness in his heart but he fails over and over again. Maybe he doesn't want to learn because he does not want to see himself fail or be a disappointment to himself. Enjambment - imitates the reality of things, he steals the guitar with an idea to learn but the reality is he never does.

"It took some time. Reassembled in the yard/he didn't look the same. I took a run/and booted him. Again. Again."
repetition shows self-destructive nature, he's punishing the parts of himself he sees in the snowman. Every time he touches beauty, he destroys it and doesn't know how to cope with it. He tried to fix the snowman because he wants a friend but yet again, failed. Sense of alienation and sadness.

"I joy-ride cars/to nowhere."
line break imitates the ride is going nowhere. He's doing all these things but in the end they all lead him nowhere.r

"You don't understand a word I'm saying, do you?"
This means that he feels like no one understands him. also could depict that the speaker does not himself recognize what he does and why he does it. it seems as if the speaker is deluded. "do you" suggests that he is having a conversation with someone who we believe is himself. he is contemplating as he himself is unclear of why he does what he does.

"sometimes i steal things i don't need" this shows that the speaker does not hold any malicious intent to steal items with high materialistic value. however, he tends to steal items with a very high emotional value which is closely associated with a person's sentiments. the word "need" shows that the items are not essential for survival and are items that hold very low value.

"but the snowman was the strangest" he says this as a snowman is perishable and temporary. he's intentions by performing this action was to witness disappointment on the faces of the children. the speaker believes in striking where it hurts the most and mentally affect the victim. the word "strangest" suggests that the speaker himself is unaware or unclear about why he has stolen it on the first place.

"boredom. mostly I'm so bored i could eat myself."
the repetition of the word "bore" exaggerates how incredibly boredom has affected him. shows he has no primary purpose in life and clarifies the extent of his frustration. as he refers to "eating" himself. this shows that his boredom is the motivation behind his crime and that he finds stealing entertaining as he serves no other purpose

"i stole a guitar i thought i might learn to play it." illustrates how he has/had goals in life that he could not achieve. he did not choose to work hard even when he possessed. the word "might" suggests that he carries the potential to persevere in life but still does not utilize this opportunity. enjambment is displayed at the end of the sentence showing the continuation of his thoughts. shows how when one thought fades away, a new thought trail emerges.

"The most unusual thing I ever stole is a snowman"
"the snowman was the strangest. You don't understand a word I'm saying, do you?"
The speaker starts the poem talking about a snowman describing it as "unusual". He also ends the poem talking about how strange the fact that he stole a snowman was. He begins with a question and ends with a question, showing that he is physically talking to someone.

"snowman"
the way the speaker describes the snowman (unusual and strange) symbolizes his confusion and self reflection of his actions. This shows that even he, himself questions his behavior.

"part of the thrill was knowing children would cry in the morning".
The speaker is aware of the externalities his actions will have on the kids which he describes as part of the "thrill". This shows that he gets satisfaction out of causing pain to other individuals, specifically kids.

"Mirrors. I sigh like this- Aah"
"Mirror" is an object that shows a reflection of the object placed in front of it which in the poem is used to represent the persona's self reflection.
The fact that he "sighs". The sigh is ambiguous as it could show his satisfaction or dissatisfaction or even both. It could be dissatisfaction as he feels guilty for his actions or maybe because society has lead him to think of himself like that.

"A snowman."
Usually gets a lot of attention from children, in relation to 'Education for Leisure' both speakers are shown as neglected by society and lack emotional empathy. The fact that it's a snowman implies that the speaker is a sadist and enjoys creating emotional scars, however, snowmen are temporary things and hold no actual value, if the speaker were to try and sell it the snowman would probably have melted before the buyer arrived or it was even bought.
"Better off dead than giving in, not taking what you want"
Stubborn and believes that no matter what he does it won't effect him, possibly referring to the fact that everyone dies eventually so nothing he does truly matters because there is no fate worse than death.
"I watch my gloved hand twisting the doorknob./ A strangers bedroom. Mirrors."
Appears as if the speaker is aware of what they're doing but not necessarily in control of it. "Mirrors" Sticks with the theme of reflecting . "gloved hand" to prevent finger prints creating mystery and anonymity of the speaker. "twisting the doorknob" could indicate that the speaker is being controlled - like the doorknob - by another person - the gloved hand. These two quotations create the image that the speaker is being controlled by an anonymous person.
"My breath ripped out in rags"
Is exaggerated and shows a sense of aggression as well as forcefulness, as if the speaker has no choice or control. Feels a lack of inner self and possibly feels insignificant in society. "Ripped out" creates a sense of imagery of no control, paired with "rags" - usually used to describe the clothing someone in poverty would wear, implying the speaker is bullied and neglected by possibly the government and society.
"Boredom. Mostly I'm so bored I could eat myself"
The speaker talks about how he steals a lot of various items and thats he gets extremely bored to the point of him eating himself for his own personal entertainment so that he does not get bored.
