During the convention, they were not allowed to speak out loud about the topic of slavery simply because they were women. Women back then had very little political or legal rights such as not having the right to vote(suffrage) or hold office,  any stipend they earned would belong to their husbands, any property owned as a single women became the husbands once married, and since there was no enactment, women could be abused by their husbands, etc. July 19-20th, 1848, Mott and Stanton later became the hosts for a national women's rights convention in New York where they modeled their proposal for women's rights, also known as the Declaration of Sentiments(To the Right). These women spoke out against the Declaration of Independence and demanded equality for women at work, school, church, and in the voting booth. Many women including fellow female abolitionists became active members of the movement and states such as New York, Massachusetts, and Indiana passed laws that gave women more equality in life. Other reforms such as women's right to vote took decades to achieve.
