Selenium is a non metal, discovered in 1817. Jön Jacobs Berzelius was working in a sulfuric acid factory when he found an impurity in the acid. it was seen as a red-brown sediment. He originally thought it was tellurium, but later realized it was a new element. He named it after selene, which means moon, due to it's similarity to tellurium, which means earth.

Selenium is useful and required in order for humans to survive. Without it, people would die from lack of selenium. Considering it lowers your chance of getting some types of cancer, cancer rates would decrease as well. Many people take selenium just to better their health. It is an important factor in having a healthy immune system. Selenium also helps to reduce high cholesterol levels by a large amount. It even reduces the side effects of chemotherapy. Overall, selenium is very dangerous if it is taken in large amounts over a short period of time, but very much needed if it is used correctly.
