Act II: Modern Hamlet Inspirations by Amanda Tillman

Instructions: (Make sure your name shows up on each post, so they count!) Make a post for each of your three inspirations, and explore the ones from your peers. Remember to 1) put up videos, photos, links, whatever goes with yours to make your pieces have visuals & 2) 1-2 sentence explanation of why.

I chose this piece because this song is very emotional and is so moving in not only the words that she says but the way she expresses them. I believe Hamlet would also be in awe of her performance for being able to emote such deep feelings through song and move him in a way to think about his father dying and being laid in earth, connecting to the song more.

I chose this piece because there is so much emotion in this one scene, not only through the song but her acting as well. I believe that Hamlet would react to it in the same way as he saw the First Player perform his speech. He would be amazed at how she is able to act so well on these particular emotions just to make the scene come alive.

I chose this piece because it is a very deep poem that speaks volumes to those who have experienced death in their life. I believe Hamlet would be taken back by the fact that only a couple of words can describe this complex idea of death. I think it would also connect to Hamlet on a deeper level because he lost his father so soon.

I chose this video clip from the recording of the scene of The Greatest Showman because Keala's performance is so packed with emotion and is memorable to me. The heart that she puts into her singing in this scene makes her a compelling character and is moving even though it's a fictional children's story.

This clip from the movie Pride and Prejudice is heated both romantically and with anger. Both characters have intense personalities and are drawn to each other in varying degrees. Darcy confesses his ardent love for Elizabeth who is shocked. Both of their performances here are outstanding in imparting deep emotions through facial expressions, tone and gestures. I think Hamlet would be quite moved by seeing these characters be so open, honest and raw.

I selected this famous work of art because the picture is so sorrowful and everything about it incites an emotional response. It seems almost a disgrace to not give it a pause to be sorry with the man in the painting. I think Hamlet would feel deeply with the man in the painting.

The reason I chose this scene from Up even though they dont talk and it is a cartoon, is that I’m not sure anybody with a heart could watch this and not cry!! It is crazy how fake characters in a children’s movie can be so realistic and make us so involved in their lives. I think Hamlet (if he didn’t hate women so much) would see this and maybe long for the type of connection they had and also relate to the sadness of the death of a loved one.

I think Hamlet would cry from this scene in The Lion King purely from the relativity this has to his life right now. His uncle killed his father to become king. Also, this is a very emotional scene in itself, in which simba lies down with his dead father’s body.

This special bond between father and son in Nemo is sure to make Hamlet shed a tear. He loved his father and didn’t like his mother very much after she remarried so I think this father-son relationship would probably make hamlet pretty emotional. Also, I think he would probably relate his uncle to the barracuda that comes in and destroys the family.

The performance by Taraji P. Henson is an especially powerful one that would move Hamlet to tears if not make him upset.

This last chapter from Milkweed is incredibly heartbreaking. A young boy is separated from his adopted family as they are sent to concentration camps and he will never see them again. This loss consumes his life and affected the way he lived. Like Hamlet, the loss of his family left him lost and confused.

“Every day I looked for Janina and every day she was not there. I was used to her constant presence,
to her mimicking everything I did. I kept glancing around to see myself repeated, but there was only me.” Milkweed page 41.

This song was written to be an empowerment for women to not let themselves be confined by the standards of society or of men, but it can also be taken as rebelling against unjust social standards. King Claudius is now the authority of the kingdom and this song would will Hamlet to fight against his uncle and seek justice.

When his father died, he took refuge in her arms and found safety and comfort next to her. She helped to ‘raised him up’ somewhat from his sadness caused by his late father.

I chose this work of art because of how so close yet so far these hands are. I feel like Hamlet can relate to this with two different people. One with Ophelia because they were so close to being together but then Polonious had to mess it up. The other being his father. Him especially since from the scene in the woods with the ghost as he was about to leave they almost touched hands just like this. Reliving that must be hard for anyone.
