1)Surveyor’s compass-I would choose a Surveyor’s compass because with the help of this device we could easily tell what direction we needed to travel to complete our mission of reaching the Pacific Ocean by land.

2)30 steels for making a fire- I would choose 30 steels for making a fire because it can be sometime difficult to start a fire, but with the help of steel we could easily start a fire at anytime in any weather.

3)Whetstones-I would choose whetstones , because on this travel there will be all of times when we will have to catch our own meat to eat , so we will have to skin those animals. We will need a whetstone to sharpen our hatchets to skin the animals.78

4)Three bushels of salt-I would choose three bushels of salt, because if we are able to get a lot of meat in one location, so with the help of salt we could preserve this meat for later on eating.

5)Blankets-I would choose blankets , because many times in unexplored land you don’t know what the weather is going to be , so you might need blankets to cover up to keep warm during the colder days of the travel.

6)Coats- I would choose coats because sometimes when you are outside for a prolonged period of time you can easily get cold, so with the help of these coats it would make it very easy to keep warm.

7)193 Pounds of portable soup- I would choose 193 pounds of portable soup because in some locations it can be very difficult to find animals for food, so this soup would make it possible for us to easily eat on our travels.

8) Hatchets-I would choose to bring some hatchets , because there are probably many times along our journey when we will need firewood to stay warm. So if we have a hatchet we can easily chop down trees for firewood.

9)2 sextants-I would choose to bring 2 sextants because if we are having to graph the locations and surroundings on our 140 maps , it would make it much easier to tell where we were located. So we could make the maps more efficiently.

10)Writing Paper Ink Crayons-I would choose to bring writing paper , ink, crayons we wouldn’t be able to make maps without these material. So our mission would be failed if we didn’t bring these along on the journey.

Captain
The captain that I would choose to take with me on this long and hard journey is Meriwether Lewis. This is because Meriwether would be able to show me the correct way to whenever I didn’t know were to go. Meriwether would be able to tell me and make sure that we never got lost. I know this because in the text it stated, “Lewis learned the theories and practices of navigation first from Jefferson, then later from trained astronomers and cartographers in Philadelphia.” This shows that Lewis had a lot of experience of navigating , because he was able to train astronomers and cartographers.
Also Meriwether Lewis was in great physical condition and he was a very good friend, this is because he was very tall and lean and he was loyal. I know this because , “Physically, he was in superb condition, over six feet tall with a lean frame.” This shows that Meriwether was very tall because the average height of a male in the 1800s was 5ft 10 inches and if he was lean that means that he didn’t way very much so he had to be in shape. In the text it also stated, “Given his army conditioning, he was fiercely loyal, disciplined, and flexible, yet was also prone to being moody, speculative, and melancholic.” This shows that Meriwether also would not be someone to turn on you, and kill you out in the wilderness, because he was loyal, flexible , and disciplined.

Private
For my Private on this travel I would choose John Coulter. This is because in the text it read it had many experience in which I would classify them as characteristics of a leader. I know this because in the text it stated, “In August 1805, Coulter accompanied Captain Clark in an attempt to scout out a way through the Rockies. Clark, who was exploring the navigability of the north fork of the Salmon River (Idaho), chose Coulter to deliver a message and a horse to Lewis, who was following with the main party.” This shows that Coulter could have not volunteered to go on the harsh journey, through the Rockies, but since Coulter was such a leader he decided to help Clark find a route , no matter the consequences even if they meant death. Many people would call that stupid , but I would call that leadership and I would want they type of person on my Corps of Discovery.
Coulter goes above and beyond what is asked of him. Coulter even though he had technically reached the coast like Thomas Jefferson ordered him he walked the other ten miles. I know this because in the text it stated, “Upon reaching the Pacific in November of 1805, Coulter was one of 10 men to accompany Captain Clark on a trek to “the main ocean” from the expedition’s “Station Camp” at Chinook Point, on the Columbia River estuary.” “The party hiked 10 miles to Cape Disappointment and northward another nine miles, following the coastline of what is now Washington state.” This shows that even though Coulter was able to do what he was asked of by Thomas Jefferson, he went with Clark went above and beyond with those other ten men and traveled the extra ten miles.

Non-Military

For my Non-Military member I would choose Sacagawea. This is because she wasn’t foreign to the unknown land that we would be traveling into. I know this because in the text it stated, “She was taken from her Rocky Mountain homeland, located in today’s Idaho, to the Hidatsa-Mandan villages near modern Bismarck, North Dakota.” This shows that Sacagawea was originally from around the Rock Mountains. With all of her knowledge she gathered while she was younger she would be the best fit , to help us go through the foreign land.

Sacagawea is very resourceful this is because she can do many different things that other Non-Military members can’t. One of those is she was able to be an interpreter between us and the Native Americans. I know this because in the text it stated, “Sacagawea would talk with them, then translate to Hidatsa for Charbonneau, who would translate to French.” This shows that Sacagawea was able to translate between the Native Americans , and then into French. She can be also helpful because she was woman and since many war tribes would travel with a woman Native Americans knew we were looking for a fight.

Plant 1-White Philadelphus lewisi

Philadelphus Lewisi is white and yellow in color, and between 4.9 feet and 12 feet and round in shape. The Corps also probably thought that since is was sort of shorter and rounded that it was actually just a bush instead of flowers. Some things that the explorers might have thought was strange was how these flowers actually came off of a sort of twig like object. Instead of a typical flower which came off of stem instead that was usually the color green. This would have been benefit the lives of American people because the Americans would be able to decorate different things from these gorgeous flowers. In conclusion these flowers , weren't like typically flowers because they were sort of in the shape of a shrub so they had many different ideas of what this flower was.
Plant 2-Pink Clarkia pulchella
Pink Clarkia pulchella is a purple petaled plant that is very short and low to the ground around . It typically grows in conditions where there is a fair amount of shade. It has little fruits that grow on the stem ,and crack when ripe. The members of the Corps might have thought of this as a regular flower, but it actually has a fruit so that means it isn’t actually a flower. The Corps could have thought of the plants as a sort of fine, since it grew so close to the ground and in sort of clumps. Since vines are all connect it looks sort of the like the clumps of Pink Clarkia pulchellas. These would be able to benefit the Americans who travel here because the Americans would be able to eat the little fruits they produce for food.

Animal 1-Prairie Dog
Prairie Dogs are usually 12-16 inches long and weigh around 3-4 pounds. They have short legs , have claws, and have a bark sort of like a dog. Some of the things that they thought of when they saw a Prairie Dog is that it actually originated from the dog family since it made many of the same sounds that dogs do. They also might have thought that it was also from the groundhog family, because Prairie Dogs have little burrows that they go down under when they feel threatened and sleep. In conclusion the members of the Corps have many different ideas of what , and where these animals came from. These animals would benefit the Americans that travel here because wild animals that would be looking for supper would eat the Prairie Dogs instead of the Americans.
Animal 2-Buffalo
A buffalo is an animals that is covered with brown fur so it is able to keep warm even when it gets down in low temperatures. They are around 8 to 9 feet tall, and weigh between 1,500 and 2,600 pounds. These very large animals have horns that curve upward, and they have bery long tails that are around 2 to 3.3 feet. The members of the corps might have just thought of them as cows that just ate a lot, since they were so large and had sort of the same structure as a regular cow. Another thing that the members of Corps could have thought to the Buffalo is that the buffalo's might actually eat them since the buffalo were so large, but that is actually impossible since buffalos are actually herbivores. These would be able to benefit the Americans who travel here because the Americans would be able to eat the meat from the buffalo for food.

The Blackfeet Indians where a very fierce and war based tribe. They were located in what is now day Northern Montana. They tribe at this time was becoming very complex on their governments, and fighting. Years before many Europeans used to winter with these Indians, but they changed. This might be because the Blackfeet Indians were one of few tribes in the area that actually traded with the French. So they also had guns , and they were able to defeat their rivals the Nez Perce and Shoshone. In conclusion the Blackfeet Indians were originally sympathetic towards the Europeans and helped them , but that changed due to the trading with the French.
The Blackfeet Indians when they first met face to face it wasn’t all that bad. The Blackfeet Indians decided that they would be staying the night with the Corps of Discovery. The only problem was that the Corps of Discovery members had many guns, which was intimidating to the Blackfeet Indians. So during the night while everyone was asleep the Blackfeet Indians decided to steal some of the members guns, but then Lewis and Reuben Field ended up killing 2 Blackfeet Warriors. The Blackfeet Indians returned back to their tribe, and told their chief all about what the Corps of Discovery , and what they were planning on doing with their land. So the Blackfeet Indians ended up killing 3 members of the Corps of Discovery.

One spot where Lewis and Clark stopped was the On-A-Slant Village. For place the On-A-Slant Village was basically where the remains of a village once was on the side of hill. Also there are around 75 of these Earth lodges, which are just homes that are built into the side of a hill, there was originally thought to be 1,000 residents. For absolute location it is 46°45'55.1"N 100°50'49.0"W. For relative location it is to the West of the junction between the Missouri River and the Heart River. For interaction I can say that the Native Americans that originally built all of these Earth Lodges had to adapt to the land formations in the area. They were mostly hills, so they decided that they would just adapt and build their homes inside the hills. For movement I can say that the original tribe of indians that lived here had to move 40 miles North because of the Troubleson Seauex. For region we can say that it is in the Northwest region of the United States.
Another spot were Lewis and Clark stopped was Great Falls. For place this was where 5 different waterfalls fall, and then created a river , which the Discovery Corps would eventually travel. The absolute location is 47°30'25.9"N 111°18'37.2"W. For relative location I can say that it is just East of the junction between the Missouri River and the Sun River. For interaction the Discovery Corps knew that it would be much easier if they adapted and traveled down the river. They had to adapt by using the multitude of trees that were around them to create canoes and oars. For movement we can say that this river that passes by the Great Falls , had made it possible for many goods to travel across the country. For region , it is a part of the Louisiana Purchase.
