Construction - Photography studio lighting

When I first started this project, I had very little knowledge about the appropriate use of studio lights and filters. Therefore, I visited the studio beforehand with a photography student who taught me how to use the equipment and the best set up for the lights so that the performance footage would be clear. After doing this, I found that the lighting was fairly easy to manipulate appropriately for our video. The only issue I encountered was with the amount of natural light in being let into the room through the blinds which interfered slightly with the projected footage onto the artist.

Construction - Camera

This was one of the most important technologies throughout the filming of our music video. Compared to last year when I used an older version of this camera, the new camera with a different lens offered us more options when it came to filming and more importantly, a steady zoom. Whilst the camera I used last year offered similar qualities, I believe that this camera was a key contributor to the quality of the overall project. The battery life of this camera was also a lot better compared to the previous camera. This meant that the shots taken were much more steady and in focus as there was no rush to film out of fear that we would run out of battery. This cameras zoom also allowed us to achieve a pull focus that adds another dimension to the overall video making it more entertaining to watch. By using a camera this year which was more closely matched to a professional camera than the one I used last year, I feel that the music video looks extremely professional. This made our video look less like a school project and more like a video which could actually be for the original song. Therefore, it was the most important technology involved in construction. Saying this, one of the issues we faced with the camera was having an insufficient amount of space on the memory card giving us 7 minutes of footage to film. Fortunately we did have a spare but it did mean having to carry spare memory cards around and wiping them after each day of filming.

Construction - Tripod

I used this for the majority of the video. This is because even when there was camera movement I used it similarly to a steady cam, moving with the camera on the tripod which created a more stable shot. Nevertheless, the tripod was used during parts of the narrative and performance of the music video. The most notable use of the tripod was actually during the prison footage (we decided against using a steady still shot during the performance as we felt this would make the video uninteresting; therefore we added lots of camera movement). This avoided any shaking throughout the footage, making the clips as steady and clear as possible. This was an important part of the construction of our video and I don't think the video would have looked as polished/professional if we hadn't used it, especially on the camera movement shots.

Construction - iMovie

When editing my video, I used iMovie. I used this software because it was simple to use but was complex enough that it enabled me to create the effects on the footage that I wanted; speed up/ slow down etc. One of the features that helped us most during this project was the colour correction tool. Using this, we were able to adjust the lighting in some of the prison footage which would have been unusable if this adjustment was not possible. The stabilising shot adjustment was also really useful, especially on the Bristol footage where it was essential that the camera movement was steady to reflect the atmosphere in the scene. In addition to this, me and Charlotte also both have the software downloaded on our laptops which made editing really easy for us as our project was always accessible. However, one of the major issues with using iMovie was that if the video was sent to another person and opened in iMovie, all the split clips would combine together meaning that no further editing adjustments could be made. This was an issue because although we both had the software, we could only edit on Charlotte's laptop meaning that our editing time was halved as we only edited during school hours.

Construction - Photoshop

I used Photoshop for the majority of the construction of the digipak and digipak poster. Using Photoshop was relatively easy because each item was separated onto a different layer which meant that layering images in an appropriate order was simple. However, in terms of photo manipulation, I had to go onto YouTube and learn how to adjust the hue and saturation of an image, cut sections of an image out and change the opacity of certain layers. Using Photoshop for this element of the project was especially useful as it was able to accomplish thing that Microsoft publisher couldn't; e.g. Cutting out an image and layering that image. Another effect that only Photoshop could achieve was the bevel and emboss effect which was essential to my design considering that it was used on the main image of the artist to draw attention to him. After learning these skills from YouTube, I would feel confident using Photoshop again in the future.

Research and planning - Blogger

One of the technologies that I used consistently throughout the entirety of my media project was Blogger. Blogger allowed me to post updates to my blog in a chronological order that enabled me to keep track of my projects progress. This was especially helpful during the construction and planning as I was able to create check lists of things I had completed and tasks that I still needed to finish. Blogger also enabled me to organise my work into specific sections such as "evaluation" and "research and planning" which allowed me to refer to my previous work more easily. This was especially helpful during the construction stage of my project where I had a lot of posts because it meant that because all the posts were in chronological order a clear progression could be seen in my digipak and video with the more I posted. The website also enabled me to post videos of my work, embed links to youtube as well as slideshow softwares that I presented my work on. This allowed me to present my work in an innovative immersive way whilst also showing my work and giving specific links to videos that inspired me throughout the project.

Emaze is another presentation software that I used sufficiently throughout the research stage of my project. Although Emaze is a presentation software, it is much more engaging than microsoft power point because I was able to select from a range of themes, designs and animations which made the presentation more immersive. It was just as engaging as Prezi but was slightly more restricted in the sense that you could only make presentations. Although it was slightly more difficult to embed images and videos, the software was perfect for presenting large paragraphs in a condensed and more appealing format.

Prezi is a presentation software that I used a lot, especially during the research tasks. This is because Prezi enabled me to embed links to other music videos on YouTube and when I evaluated them, I was able to make specific references to certain elements in the videos. Prezi's designs offered an alternative layout to the typical powerpoint and included designs such as mind maps, spider diagrams etc. This meant that I could use this software repeatedly because each design was so different that they were all engaging.

Spider scribe was a software that was most helpful to me during the planning toga elf my project. Spider scribe allowed me to create a mind map of all the possible music video concepts which could then automatically be embedded into my blog. This saved me a significant amount of time on writing and scanning things onto my computer which was important considering the limited time scale we had to plan our video. I was also able to embed images and videos into spider scribe which meant that when I had ideas that couldn't be explained I was able to add an image or video of what I meant instead.

Youtube was something that I used consistently throughout the entirety of my project. However, it was most helpful during the planning and research tasks as I was able to look at professional music videos, say what worked well and what didn't, then reference the ones that I like during the planning stage and create a similar concept. During research, this was also vital during the creative research tasks as it enabled me to upload my mini-projects, for example; the Lip-Syncing video. I also used YouTube during this stage to gain audience feedback which was really useful in allowing me to discover what people enjoyed and didn't enjoy about music videos. The video software also enabled me to upload the first and second cut of my video during the construction stage of my project. Because the video was public, anyone could click on it meaning that it was a really helpful source for audience feedback.
