The US wanted to expand moves so they took part of the upper west coast but Britain wanted some too so they split the territory at the 49th parallel.
At the time, the President rallied America to gain Oregon or declare War on Britain. Both sides not actually wanting conflict, they compromised by dividing the territory on the 49th parallel. Britain only lost the Columbia river, keeping Vancouver island.

Was there a justification for the US to take this territory? (michael)

The US was not really justified in taking this territory. Though the US did gain a lot of territory and resources, a lot of Native Americans lost their lives and their cultures went nearly extinct. Americans brought diseases that the Natives were not immune to, and those diseases spread like wild fire.
One could argue that loss of life would occur either way, and that the US was justified because either way, people would die because Oregon would eventually be conquered by somebody, however this is not rational, because it goes back to the age old saying, its either us or them, which is morally ambiguous and highly debated.
