The Bridge by Bill Konigsberg

This is an important work of realistic fiction that examines the issue of teen suicide and that was written by a novelist who knows the struggles first-hand. Aaron and Tillie's first encounter occurs on the George Washington Bridge, a place where both have gone with a plan to end their lives. Four scenarios play out in the novel: Aaron jumps, Tillie jumps, they both jump, and neither jumps. Konigsberg not only focuses on the main characters and what's going on in their their headspace but also some of the secondary characters and how they are changed by the decisions of Aaron and Tillie.

Everything is fine until a meme from their confession video begins to circulate around school. How could this possibly happen? What does it mean for the four friends?

*This is a quick read that will appeal to Karen McManus readers. I liked it, but thought that the character development was a bit weak. At times, I struggled to remember which character was which, especially since Starmer uses the alternating chapter format. This book is now available in the BGHS Library.

It is told by Yang, a teacher at the school who cares very little about the sport until he decides to travel with the team and use its story in his upcoming graphic novel. The experience leaves him changed and with plenty of material for his novel.
*I genuinely enjoyed reading this one! I liked how Yang told the story of the team while also weaving in stories about the personal lives of the players and about the history of basketball. This graphic novel is on order and will soon be available in the BGHS Library.

Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon

*This is another great work from David Yoon. Like Frankly in Love, this is a work of realistic fiction with a twist of romance from a male POV. I borrowed this title from the SDHS Library, but I will certainly order it for our collection if there is interest.

*This is one of the best books I've read in awhile! It's perfect for fans of The Hunger Games or Warcross. All three books in the series have been published and are available in the BGHS Library.

American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

This is another graphic novel from Gene Luen Yang. This one tells three alternating stories that seem unrelated, but actually all come together at the end of the novel. Readers are first introduced to Monkey King who can't accept his lot as a monkey and wants desperately to be accepted by those he views as wise and powerful. Then, we meet Jin who feels very self-conscious being one of the only Asian American students at his school. Finally, readers meet Chin-Kee through his cousin Danny, who is very embarrassed by his relative who comes to visit him every year.

*This graphic novel had a lot more substance than I expected it to. It forces readers to think about the painful effects of negative stereotyping and about self-acceptance. This book is currently available on SORA, one of our online resources for ebooks and audiobooks.

More Than Just a Pretty Face by Syed M. Masood

This is a standalone novel by debut YA author Syed M. Masood. It's a realistic, coming-of-age, romance with a male POV. Danyal Jilani rarely impresses his Muslim father who wants him to forget about his dreams of being coming a chef and focus on his studies. Will Danyal respect his wishes and win the title of Renaissance Man? Or, will Danyal realize that he needs to embrace what's important to him, despite the cost?

*I thought the main characters were really well-written. They were very likable and, even though fictional, realistically dealt with sensitive/important issues. Some of the Muslim characters are a bit stereotypical, but I think those characters had to be written that way in order for the plot to work out as it did. I think this is a good novel choice for readers who like the work of David Yoon. This title is currently available in the BGHS Library.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

As wonderful as this sounds, she soon realizes that there are a lot of individuals out to get her, many with the Hawthorne last name. Can Avery stay alive long enough to figure out all of the mysteries and puzzles attached to the newly inherited wealth?

*I'm a huge fan of this author. His characters are generally ones who - despite their circumstances and rural upbringing - overcome huge obstacles and self-doubts. Animal Farm by George Orwell

This is a classic novella that I somehow missed reading in high school and college, so I recently had the opportunity to enjoy it for the first time. In this satirical allegorical work, barnyard animals rise up and overthrow their farmer. Initially, the animals do surprisingly well taking care of their needs without human intervention, but what will happen when some of the animals start bending the rules and start getting power hungry?

*As far a classic works go, this one is easy to digest and appreciate. Don't wait as long as I did to read it! The novella is available in print in the BGHS library.

Kent State

Writing in verse, Wiles uses multiple points of view to tell the story of what happened at Kent State on May 4, 1970, that ended with the deaths of four students. The multiple voices show that sometimes the same event can be viewed and interpreted in different ways. Wiles also includes notes at the end that help give important historical insight.

*This is a title that made me what to do a deeper dive into the primary and secondary sources that are easily accessible online and in libraries. This book is available in print in the BGHS Library.

The Snow Fell Three Graves Deep by Allan Wolf

In this work of historical fiction, Allan Wolf recounts the tragic tale of the Donner Party by writing from multiple perspectives, both young and old. Readers even hear from hunger and two prized oxen who are with the individuals as they journey from Illinois to Sutter's Fort in the West.

While Wolf admits to taking a few creative liberties, most of what he writes is based on the primary sources that survive (ie. letters, journals, books written by the survivors).

Reading this definitely gave me a deeper understanding of the Donner Party. Honestly, I had forgotten (or maybe never knew) that 89 individuals were part of the group or that 52 of them were children and infants. I had also forgotten that those who were snowed in at Truckee Lake were only about 90 miles from reaching their destination.

*I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the Donner Party and the tough decisions that were made in order to survive (or try to). The book is available in print in the BGHS Library.

Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee

While we all know the story of the Titanic, this novel focuses on the Chinese on board, particularly twins Jamie and Valora who are trained acrobats with a plan to catch the attention of a first-class passenger who just might be able to get them into America and the Ringling Brothers' Circus.

I enjoyed this novel, but if I'm being honest, I like Lee's earlier book The Downstairs Girl better. So, that's my first choice for readers who are just being introduced to this author's work.

Displacement by Kiku Hughes

This graphic novel employs time travel to take the main character back to the 1940s to experience what life was life for her grandmother who was sent to an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This experience makes her want to learn more and be sure that history doesn't repeat itself.

I recently read They Called Us Enemy by George Takei. It was interesting to compare and contrast two graphic novels about the same subject/time in history.

The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The second installment in this trilogy doesn't disappoint! It's such a fun mix of suspense, mystery, and romance. I can't wait to see how all the loose ends are tied up in The Final Gambit, scheduled to be released at the end of August 2022. Truly, this series is a must-read!

An Emotion of Great Delight by Tahereh Mafi

Shadi, the Muslim protagonist, feels like her world is crumbling. Her father is hospitalized, her brother is dead, and her ex-best friend is convinced that she's hooking up with her brother. She's so overwhelmed that she really can't focus on her schoolwork or the fact that the United States is at war with Iraq. Can she heal herself and her relationships, or is everything just too far gone?

I wasn't sure that I liked this book immediately after finishing it, but after a few days of reflection, I think it would be a title that would be interesting to discuss with others. Some of the themes are universal and are definitely ones that today's teens struggle with, regardless of their background. (I had a much more favorable opinion of A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Mafi after my initial read, so I'd recommend that readers try it first.)

This Light Between Us by Andrew Fukuda

The situation is horrible, but as time goes on, Alex realizes that his situation could be much worse. Charlie, his Jewish pen pal from France has been forced from her home too. Alex, in an attempt to help Charlie and his family, decides to enlist. Read this book to find out what happens to Alex and Charlie.

This is another great title to read if you are interested in learning more about Japanese internment and WWII.

A Pho Love Story by Loan Le

This is an easy-to-read story. I would certainly recommend it to readers who enjoy works by Frank Yoon.

Two Truths and a Lie by April Henry

This is a great title for readers who enjoy both music and realistic fiction with a touch of mystery/horror. This work begins with the promise of the most extragavant music festival one can imagine....famous singers, yachts, a tropical paradise. However, when concertgoers get to Myla, it's far from what was promised. As the body count rises, Adri takes it upon herself to figure out just what's going on so that she can save others and get herself home.

The Cat I Never Named by Amra Sabic-El-Rayess

In this work, readers learn what it was like to grow up a teenager in war-torn Bosnia in the early 1990s. Amra and her family members do their best to support each other, while dealing with hunger, bombings, anxiety, and death. Amra's comfort comes from a loyal stray cat and from hopes of someday being able to continue her education.

This work made me realize just how fortunate I was to be a teen in America during this time. It's a powerful read that left me wanting to educate myself even more about this region and the ethic cleansing that took place there.

This one reads a bit like an updated Parent Trap. In this novel, Abby realizes that she has a sister that she never knew about after taking a DNA test. In an attempt to learn more about each other, they decide to go to the same summer camp. What will happen, though, after their parents (ex-best friends turned sworn enemies) find out what they are up to?

This one is perfect for readers who enjoy realistic fiction with a touch of romance and nods to pop culture.

All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman

In this book, readers quickly learn that seven families want to win one bloody tournament. Each family has selected a champion to cast magick and do all that s/he can to survive and win. However, as the tournament begins, it becomes quite clear that not all of the champions are willing to play by the age-long rules. Some think it's best to form alliances and break the tournament. The book ends on a real cliff hanger, so if you want to know how the story ends, you'll have to read the second book in the duology.

*This fantasy book grew on me as I started to learn more about the characters and their motivations. I would recommend it to readers who enjoyed Caster by Elsie Chapman or The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This title is available in the BGHS Library and on SORA in electronic format.

Deep Water by Watt Key

*I picked this book up because I remembered how much I loved reading "Tell Me Three Things," another book by this author. I wasn't disappointed. This is a great work of realistic fiction that will give readers a chance to pause and consider what it's like to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes." All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir

This novel is told from three characters' perspectives in alternating chapters. Two are teenagers who have been best friends since they were six. Together, Sal and Noor have faced many difficult, sometimes unspeakable, things in their lives. Will their friendship be able to endure a choice that could mean time in prison and revoked college admission? Misbah, Sal's mom, knows their secrets and does all that she can in life (and in death) to see that they are protected and loved. Will her influence be enough to help Sal and Noor survive - and possibly even thrive?

*This work of realistic fiction was the winner of the 2022 National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the Printz Award. In my opinion, it deserves these recognitions and more. Tahir tackles some hard social issues and avoids sugar-coating anything, but I believe she also provides a lot of "food for thought" and hope for positive change. The Agathas by Kathleen Glasow and Liz Lawson

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron

Trees and flowers respond when Briseis walks by. She can touch highly poisonous plants and not die. When the story opens, she doesn't understand these abilities, but Briseis quickly finds out that it's a trait passed down through her family for generations, all the way back to Medea in ancient mythology. When she inherits a family estate, questions are answered, but unexpected dangers start to present themselves too.

I enjoyed this book and am getting ready to start the companion so that I'm not left with a cliffhanger! I would highly suggest this one to those who enjoy the paranormal or mythological.

Family Style by Thien Pham

In this graphic novel, author Thien Pham recounts his life story - from early childhood as a Vietnamese refugee to a naturalized adult US citizen. The work depicts his family's resilience and determination to obtain "the American dream." Time and time again, readers see his parents challenged by this new life in a foreign country, but each time refusing to give up on what they want for their children. Pham incorporates food into his work to highlight how each dish represents an important memory for him.

This is a quick read that will give insight into the refugee crisis/immigration experience, but even more than that, it makes readers think about their own families and what defines them.

Give Me a Sign by Anna Sortino

Lilah, whose hearing is improved by the use of hearing aids, is headed to a deaf and blind summer camp to serve as a junior counselor. She loved the camp as a kid, but Lilah worries that she won't be great at her job because she doesn't know ASL. When she gets to camp, she experiences both successes and challenges while trying to navigate a possible new relationship with another counselor and while trying to save the camp after finding out that it needs funding in order to continue to operate.

I highly recommend this realistic work of fiction. The author is deaf and does a great job of helping readers better understand the deaf experience. This book is available in the BGHS Library.

*I enjoyed this novel. There were a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing as the story unfolded. This book is available on SORA currently, but I plan to order a print copy for the BGHS Library.

Ian has more than enough reasons to lose hope and give up, but that's not who he is. The best word to describe this character is determined. While this book has a rural setting and is about a boy and his dog, it's deep. It forces readers to grapple with the sometimes harsh realities of life and to reflect on those who are always there, ready to gather round and provide support when it's needed most.

My Mechanical Romance by Alexene Farol Follmuth

In this novel with alternating chapters, Willow's mother is called to Salem, Massachusetts, to help broker the sale of her family home. Willow goes along and with the help of Mason, a foster kid new to Salem, discovers a family history that she never new existed.

*I enjoyed this novel. While there are a few references to witchcraft, the book is more of a realistic work of fiction than fantasy fiction. This would be a great choice for readers who enjoyed The Inheritance Games series. This book is available in print in the BGHS Library.

Sunrise Nights by Jeff Zentner and Brittany Cavallaro

*This novel in verse is raw and honest. We root for the characters and hope that their insecurities and imperfections won't be obstacles that keep them from thriving.

Jeff Zentner is one of my favorite YA authors, and he didn't disappoint. Available in print in the BGHS Library.

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

In the first part of the novel, Iris and Roman are competing for an opportunity to write for a highly regarded newspaper. They consider themselves rivals, but things quickly change thanks to magical typewriters and an uptick in wargames between the gods.

This is the first book in a duology and was one of my favorite reads this year! (I'm reading the second book in the duology now.) It's no wonder that it spent so long on the New York Times Best Seller list! The title is available in print in the BGHS Library.
