Assistive Technology - Tactile Graphics

Tactile graphics are images or diagrams designed to be felt rather than seen. By using raised lines, textures, and elevations to represent visual information, Michael can participate in lessons through his sense of touch. Introducing him to tactile graphics early on will help build his foundational skills for future learning and communication. For example, we could start by teaching Michael about simple shapes, having him feel each shape as we verbally identify it. As we progress, we can expand his knowledge by introducing numbers, braille, and exploring different tactile materials, such as textured paper, foam stickers, and other manipulatives to keep him engaged.

Assistive Technology - Auditory Communicator

Auditory devices provide an effective way for students who are blind or visually impaired to access information and communicate with others. These devices can scan through pre-recorded messages at a volume that only the user can hear. When the user finds the message they wish to play, they simply press the switch plate again to amplify the volume. This technology can be particularly helpful during Michael's lessons, allowing him to respond with "yes" or "no," identify shapes that he feels using tactile graphic boards, and communicate requests for a bathroom break or water.

Vision Impairment Teaching Strategies

This resource provides valuable information on teaching students with vision impairments. It emphasizes that by offering appropriate accommodations and making adjustments to the curriculum, we can create equal opportunities for students with vision impairments to access the educational material.

In Michael's case, since he has low vision, it is crucial to take necessary steps to ensure he feels comfortable, understands the lessons, and has effective means of communication. For instance, when entering a room or approaching Michael, it is best to address him verbally and let him know when you are specifically speaking to him. Also, if you want his attention, say his name and use verbal praise, or employ tactile reinforcers, such as a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

Hands-on learning benefits all students, but it is especially important for those with vision impairments. It is vital to use real objects with Michael whenever possible. For instance, when exploring new items or directing his attention, utilize the hand-under-hand technique, in which the teacher places their hand under the student’s hand to guide it.

Tactile graphics and raised-line drawings can also be valuable for Michael, helping to convey information typically found in illustrations and drawings. Key vocabulary and concepts, such as shapes, can be taught to Michael using concrete, multi-sensory experiences combined with verbal explanations.

How to Teach a Blind or Visually Impaired Student

This video provides several tips for working with students like Michael who have vision impairments. As educators, our primary goal is to ensure that all students have equal access to learning materials. In Michael’s case, it is essential to implement strategies that foster an inclusive learning environment. When teaching a lesson, it’s important to clearly describe all visual materials to help Michael follow along. Always provide verbal instructions for every assignment and activity so he has a full understanding of what we will be working on. Additionally, we should establish a means for him to communicate his needs, such as using assistive technology like an auditory communicator to notify us when he needs water or a bathroom break. Moreover, Michael may require extra time to complete his assignments, as using tactile graphics or other forms of technological assistance may take additional time. These are just a few suggestions that can help Michael communicate effectively and grasp concepts more thoroughly.
