I learned that she was born into slavery and never grew up away from that life. I did not know that both her parents were slaves to two people who eventually married, which was what lead to the meeting of her parents and birth of her and her 8 siblings. Another huge thing that I learned was that while liberating hundreds of slaves, Tubman was plagued by intense medical problems and physical hindrances. This makes her life's work that much more astounding and tragic. The underground railroad is well known for it's effectiveness and the momentous number of lives that it helped improve. Tubman first encountered the railroad when she escaped from slavery herself. She then started serving as a guide to help other people find freedom as well. The total of the network of safe houses for people to travel along, spanned hundreds of miles.
