1. The criminals are still people who deserve a fair trial and the right punishment for their respective crimes
2. They would be proving that they’re just as bad as the people they say to be acting only out of self-preservation (by blowing another ship of ppl up to live)
3. Putting it to a vote allows the citizens to distance themselves from the act of deciding to blow up a ship, as in their minds, it is a collective who votes and not just them. However, no one is actually willing to press the detonator themselves, as they don’t want the deaths on their conscience.
