Many soldiers had to deal with blood loss in World War 1. The history of blood banks started in 1914 when Belgian physician Dr. Albert Hustin found that adding sodium citrate to transfusing blood prevented clotting. The ideal concentration was discovered a year later by Dr. Richard Lewisohn. With this discovery, blood transfusions could be performed safely without the need for medical supervision. This method rescued thousands of wounded men during the war.

One major challenge was the lack of widespread knowledge about blood types and compatibility. Mismatched blood transfusions sometimes led to severe reactions, including death. When blood banks started appearing, there initially was the problem of how to store it for long periods of time.

Medical and healthcare sectors were positively impacted by blood banks. Because of them, people low on blood could receive more and have it done safely.
