Strand 3: Science in Personal and Social Perspectives - Concept 2: Science and Technology in Society (Understand the impact of technology):

The class will complete an in-class assignment which is to make their own windmills/pinwheel. The students will use construction paper, pencil, straws, markers, ruler, and scissors.

Here are the instructions the students will follow:

1) Start with a square piece of paper at least 4 x 4 in. The students can use different colors or designs on each side.

2) Use the ruler to draw diagonal lines from each corner of your square and mark a dot in the middle, then cut along the diagonal line to about an inch from the center dot.

3) Mark 4 dots it the bottom right corner of each triangle of your square.

4) Work in a circle folding each dotted corner into the center of the square. Push a pin through each corner and the center dot.

5) Push the pin through the head of an eraser on a pencil or a straw

This is a three-day lesson. As they make their own windmill/pinwheel, the class will understand what they want to know about wind energy. On the first day, I would ask students to write down what they already know about wind energy. Next, we will discuss different ways we get energy. I will also explain to them what a wind turbine is. After they finished, the students will go outside to the playground to test which way the turbines are blowing.
