This has been an on-going problem this year. I have students who are not coming to class, not participating, not turning in their assignments, etc. With that said, their grades have suffered tremendously. Unfortunately, it is significantly harder to get students back on track when there is lack of parental support. I have tried emailing and calling these students' parents, but to no avail. It is a daily struggle, and there is only so much we can control and do with our limited resources.

I learned...focus on essential standards

As I look at this statement, I notice that it's not necessarily curriculum that I needed/need to reteach, but important concepts. For example, my 5th graders just learned how to divide single and double digit numbers. A big problem that I saw this year was that students were lacking fluency in their multiplication facts. I am not necessarily reteaching curriculum, but I do need to go back and practice specific skills that students will need in order to be successful in 5th grade and beyond. On that note, I am really honing in on standards that students need to meet by the end of 5th grade and making sure that they currently have the skills to meet those standards by the end of the school year. I am not looking at "curriculum" per say, but have definitely focused on essential standards.

I learned...roles & high expectations

Throughout this course and in the research we conducted for our case study, I have learned so much about social/emotional development. My goal was to find a way to strengthen relationships during hybrid learning, even if it was through a screen. Assigning roles in groups and providing clear and high expectations was the key to group success. Assigning roles forced all students to be engaged and participate in the Nearpod lesson and meet the learning goals for the lesson. Students also held each other accountable, promoting positive interdependence.

I can only control what I can control. For some students, I was able to see right away that someone was helping them at home once they came back in person. Having informative/formative assessments in class has definitely helped me drive instruction based on the results. As for my Zoomers, assessments can only be completed with their cameras on, facing them and their test. This has been the only way I can "control" any type of cheating/help from home. It is easier to monitor now that only half of my class is online, and that I have 2 cohorts. I only have about 6-9 students on Zoom in the morning and in the afternoon. i-Ready Diagnostics have done a great job showing me exactly where students stand in both reading and math. I do take assessments with a grain of salt compared to their overall achievement. However, I will say that it seems pretty accurate when comparing assessment scores and their performance to their academics.
