Classroom environment is one of, if not the the most important aspects of student learning. The environment of the classroom sets students up for success.

Make expectations clear from the beginning of school will set the tone for a very good year

Be consistent with all students and the results will be your students respecting your decisions.

Build relationships with your students. Relationships give the students a better sense of belonging and a place to feel more secure.

An article in Teacher Magazine suggests the importance of not letting your students choose their own seating. By creating a seating chart it makes it fair for all students and it gives you the ability to group them according to the needs of the student

Classroom layout – what does the research say?. For years I have tried my best to use natural lighting as much as possible. In an article from Edutopia there was a study done with 21,000 US students, of those students exposed to natural light their reading scores were up 26 percent and math scores were up 20 percent.

The Science of Effective Learning Spaces.
Main barriers

To me there are many barriers that impact student learning. 1) Home life, We do not always know what is going on at home. Students can be hungry , taking care of siblings or even taking care of their parents. In todays society we have many grandparents that are raising their grand kids and doing the best they can under the circumstances. These things can take a toll on student learning and the better we get to know them, the better we can serve them.
2) Peer pressure, I watch students everyday that are effected through peer pressure. Their mood in class changes, their study habits change, their overall aspect of school and learning changes. 3) Language barrier, the school that I teach at know has a high number of hispanic students and many of them only speak spanish. This is a huge barrier for their learning, we use pictures and words of the day to help them get accustomed to the language

Developing strong relationships with your students can help you more than many other methods that are out there. By building these strong relationships you gain trust and students will open up and talk to you about what is going on with them. When students feel safe with their surroundings they will tell you their needs and when they are having problems or struggling. An article in the ASCD website said “The most powerful weapon available to secondary teachers who want to foster a favorable learning climate is a positive relationship with our students”
Developing Positive Teacher-Student Relations . (2019). Ascd.org. Parents and students alike prefer those good phone calls home

One of the strongest partnerships you can build is with your parents and guardians. Positive contacts and them being aware that you care about their child will build a strong relationship as well as giving them the confidence that you will take care of and respect their child.

Partnerships with the community will help you in many ways. Guest speakers and chaperones are a couple of advantages of community leaders. They can also give you support and help out in the classroom.
