1. He belonged to an affluent merchant family settled in the port town of Skien, which was well known for shipping timber
2. When Henrik Ibsen was eight years old, his father lost his fortune and became an alcoholic. This event traumatized the author for life.

3. Mr. Ibsen had to leave school at age 15 and worked as a pharmacist apprentice.
4. At age 23 he became theatre director and resident playwright of the new National Theatre at Bergen, charged with creating a “national drama.”
5. In 1850 Henrik Ibsen went to Christiana to prepare for entrance exams into a university. He was not accepted and gave up on his dream of being a doctor and started studying drama as a stage manager.
6. After the satire Pillars of Society (1877) he found his voice and an international audience with powerful studies of middle-class morality in A Doll’s House (1879) and Ghosts (1881)
7. He greatly influenced European theatre and is regarded as the founder of modern prose drama.
8. Henrik Ibsen died May 23, 1906 from a stroke
9. While Ibsen may be gone, his work continues to be performed around the world. Peer Gynt, A Doll's House and Hedda Gabler are the most widely produced plays today.
10. After Shakespeare he is considered as the second most influential and insightful dramatist and poet of the 19th century.
11. A Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen is considered as the father of Modern Theatre. He is also referred as the father of realism.
12. Henrik Ibsen was the eldest of his five siblings.
13. All through his childhood, Ibsen had been doomed and depressive that can easily be seen in his work which is as much a reflection of his own life. Even in most plays he had named his characters after his family and acquaintances like in his most surreal drama, Rosmersholm (1886).
14. In 1843, upon being forced to leave school, Ibsen traveled to the town of Grimstad, where he started apprenticing in an apothecary’s shop.
15. His family’s fleeting financial fortunes had a lasting impression on his work, as several of his plays feature middle-class families dealing with financial hardship in a society that values morality and decorum.
16. In his later works, the psychological conflicts Ibsen subjected his characters to went beyond the challenge of the mores of the time, having a more universal and interpersonal dimension.
17. He suffered his first stroke in 1900, and he died in 1906 in his home in Kristiania. In his last years, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature three times, in 1902, 1903, and 1904.

18. Ibsen had an interest in becoming an artist from a young age.
19. Love’s Comedy 1862, a satire on romantic illusions, was violently unpopular, but it expressed an authentic theme of anti-idealism.
20. In 1849, he wrote his first play influenced by William Shakespeare named Catilina.

Henrik Ibsen was born March 20th, 1828 in Skien, Norway

He was the second highest of his 5 brothers, but with the premature death of his elder brother (Johan Altenburg) he became and treated as the eldest. His brothers were Johan Andreas, Nocolai Alexander, Ole Paus and one sister called Hedvig.

Henrik's father became bankrupt and they had to move to a rural cottage in 1836 this led to his study in medicine and then his job as a playwright and only his family was affected.

When he reached the age of 15, Ibsen was taken away from his school as the Norwegian tradition order. At that age he wanted to be a painter, but as he was going abroad and by his family circumstances, that decision was not an option.

In 1846 he became involved with a woman older than him, she was a handmaid and they had a son (Hans Jacob Hendrichsen Birkedalen). He paid the maintenance to the maid for about 14 years and he never met the child.

In 1843, at the age of 15 Henrik moved to Grimstad, a hamlet of some 800 persons 70 miles (110 km) down the coast being an apothecary’s apprentice.

First work Catilina (1850; Catiline), not a very good play with a rebellious hero and a destructive mistress.

In 1850 he went to Christiania, studied for entrance examinations there, and settled into the student quarter—though not into classes.

At the age of only 23 he got himself appointed director and playwright to a new theater at Bergen, where he wrote a play each year.

He moved to Christiania and with his marriage to Suzannah Thoresen in 1858

Love’s Comedy 1862, a satire on romantic illusions, was violently unpopular, but it expressed an authentic theme of anti-idealism.

The Pretenders 1863, the dramatization of the mysterious inner authority that makes a man a man, a king, or a great playwright. This one play was in fact the national drama after which Ibsen had been groping so long, and before long it would be recognized as such.

Theater Christiania went bankrupt during 1862, and Ibsen’s career as a stage writer was apparently at an end.

In April 1864 he left Norway for Italy.

In 1873, Henrik Ibsen was awarded Knighthood by the King of Norway.

For the next 27 years he lived abroad, mainly in Rome, Dresden, and Munich, returning to Norway only for short visits in 1874 and 1885.

From 1886 his works and plays started to be more self analytic in comparison to his first popular works. His latest works were The Lady from the Sea (1888), Hedda Gabler (1890), The Master Builder (1892), Little Eyolf (1894), John Gabriel Borkman (1896), When We Dead Awaken (1899)

Being made a Commander in 1892, in 1893, he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav.

In 1891 he decided to return to Norway, maybe because of her conscious personal feelings that keep in his plays and the creation of obsessive characters that influence society. Also can be because of uncomfortable dalliances he had with young women.

After his return to Norway, he continued to write plays until a stroke in 1900 left him to a bedridden invalid. dying on May 23 1906.

SOURCES:
https://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/henrik-ibsen-198.php

https://www.britannica.com/biography/Henrik-Ibsen

1. Henrik Ibsen was born March 20th, 1828 in Skien, Norway

2. As a child, Ibsen showed little sign of the theatrical genius he would become. He grew up in the small Norwegian coastal town of Skien as the oldest of five children born to Knud and Marichen Ibsen

3. Ibsen moved to Christiania (later known as Oslo) in 1850 to prepare for university examinations to study at the University of Christiania.

4. This work, Catilina (1850; Catiline), grew out of the Latin texts Ibsen had to study for his university examinations. Though not a very good play, it showed a natural bent for the theatre and embodied themes

5. Ibsen left Norway in 1862, eventually settling in Italy for a time. There he wrote Brand, a five-act tragedy about a clergyman whose feverish devotion to his faith costs him his family and ultimately his life in 1865

6. In 1868, Ibsen moved to Germany. During his time there, he saw his social drama The Pillars of Society first performed in Munich. The play helped launch his career and was soon followed up by one of his most famous works, A Doll's House.

7. His next work, 1881's Ghosts, stirred up even more controversy by tackling such topics as incest and venereal disease

8. His next work, An Enemy of the People, showed one man in conflict with his community. Some critics say it was Ibsen's response to the backlash he received for Ghosts.

9. Ibsen wrote The Lady From the Sea (1888) and then soon headed back to Norway, where he would spend the remainder of his years.

10. One of his most famous works was to follow, in Hedda Gabler. With Hedda Gabler (1890), Ibsen created one of the theater's most notorious characters. Hedda, a general's daughter, is a newlywed who has come to loathe her scholarly husband, yet she destroys a former love who stands in her husband's way academically.

11. In 1891, Ibsen returned to Norway as a literary hero. He may have left as a frustrated artist, but he came back as internationally known playwright. For much of his life, Ibsen had lived an almost reclusive existence

12. His later works seem to have a more self-reflective quality with mature lead characters looking back and living with the consequences of their earlier life choices. And each drama seems to end on a dark note.

13. counters a woman from his past who encourages him to make good on a promise. In When We Dead Awaken, written in 1899, an old sculptor runs into one of his former models and tries to recapture his lost creative spark. It proved to be his final play.

14. In 1900, Ibsen had a series of strokes that left him unable to write. He managed to live for several more years, but he was not fully present during much of this time.

15. Ibsen died on May 23, 1906. His last words were "To the contrary!" in Norwegian. Considered a literary titan at the time of his passing, he received a state funeral from the Norwegian government.
