In the story Names/Nombres Julia's attitude changes in many different ways towards her ethnicity throughout the story. In the beginning when Julia's family first immigrates to the US in the 50's from the Dominican Republic, she is astonished and confused about why nobody can pronounce their names. " I was too afraid we wouldn’t be let in if l corrected the man’s pronunciation, but I
said our name to myself, opening my mouth wide for the organ blast of the a,
trilling my tongue for the drum-roll of the r, All-vah-rrr-es! How could anyone get
Elbures out of that orchestra of sound?" this is shown here when Julia is afraid to correct the customs officer at the gate in case he doesn't allow their family in. When she starts school too she sees more of this when nobody is able to pronounce her and her sister's names.
As time goes on and Julia becomes more popular in school she starts to accept the american names that her friends have given her. Plus as the 60's start rolling in people start to become more willing to learn to pronounce the more ethnic names now. But even when her relatives visit for her gradation and she introduces them to her friends, she still feels kinda embarrassed since most haven't heard more than Mom and Dad," These relatives had such complicated names and there were so many of them, and their relationships to myself were so convoluted. There was my Tía Josefina, who was not really an aunt but a much older cousin. And her daughter, Aida Margarita, who was adopted, una hija de crianza. My uncle of affection, Tío José, brought my madrina Tía Amelia and her comadre Tía Pilar. My friends rarely had more than a “Mom and Dad” to introduce.". Throughout the story Julia's attitude changes towards her family's ethnicity and how she is different, she accepts it and comes to terms with the differences and learns that just because her family is different doesn't mean she has to be ashamed of it.

Julia Alvarez's attitude about her family and her family being different changes from nervous and embarrassed in the beginning and more confident and proud in the end. When they got to the city she realized that it wasn't going to be easy to fit in. " At Immigration, the officer asked my father, Mister Elbures, if he had anything to declare." It then happened again at the hotel. " At the hotel my mother was Missus Alburest." She started to figure out that it was different here and she was going to have to get used to it. At school, she didn't fit in. People would call her by the wrong names constantly. Judy, Judith, Juliet.

At the end she feels more proud. She has friends and every body recognizes her. She feels like she can be different without being emberassed.

Julia's attitude about her ethnicity and differences changes throughout the story because at the beginning she thought of correcting the name about saying her name wrong. Later on in the story she didn't bother to correct other people of pronouncing her name wrong because she was starting to become proud that she was like everyone else.
She becomes somewhat jealous that her sister, Ana, has becomes more like an American then her and her sister. In the end when her family is celebrating her graduation she feels happy and proud that her family is her and she feels more proud of her ethnicity and culture.

Julia Alvarez's attitude about her and her family being different changes from embarrassed and confused at the beginning to proud at the end of the story. At the beginning of the story, Julia was confused why Americans in New York couldn't pronounce Julia as HOOLEEYAH. She was worried if she corrected them her family wouldn't be let into New York. By the time she went to school and she spent more time in America she liked her American nicknames because she felt like she fit in and was embarrassed by her Dominican roots.

Her attitude changed by the end and was proud at her graduation for her family to be Different as they cheered for her in their native language. She now realizes how important her heritage is.
