Middle of 19th century, they were divided into countries under influence of Austria who controlled northeast and the kingdom of Sardinia Piedmont. Austrians grew worried of the liberal uprisings in Italy, so sent troupes in to restore order. In 1833, members of Young Italy were arrested for plotting rebellion in Sardinia, currently with Charles Albert as new king, there were other failed ones 1834 Piedmont and across Italy 1840s. 1846, Paes the knight was elected pope, where he introduced liberal ideas.
