I intentionally selected endangered or targeted animals to replace the Mount Rushmore Monument. The Bison represents the stolen land of the Sioux for the creation of the monument. The lion represents President Rooselvelt because he used to trophy hunt them. I chose the wolf and falcon for the devastation of their habitats. To create this, I printed out images and placed the heads of the animals onto a picture of Mount Rushmore. I used a black piece of paper as a base and blended layers of colors to create shadows and shade. When I was a kid, my family used to rent a Ghibli Studio movie through Netflix every Saturday for movie night. This house is from the movie "Kiki's Delivery Service", and it displays the warmth of family memories. I outlined the house in a micron pen before I started painting. To create this piece, I made a grid to ensure the scaling was accurate. Then I made smaller shapes to display the shades and highlights. I also used a variety of different pencils to get darker and lighter colors, and blended it to give a softer appeal.  I chose an ampersand because I wanted it to represent inclusivity. An ampersand means "and", which is used to include more things.  I interpreted it in a people sense-- it's always including other people because of it's meaning.

The crystal ball is also one of my eyes. I wanted to use it to display an interesting aspect of my heritage—the Chinese Dragon. I used graphite pencils and a blending stump to create shadows and highlights in my face and hair. I made a 1" grid to ensure that my scaling was correct. In sophomore year, my art teacher assigned us to explore someone's struggles with voting rights. I created tones and shades of opposite colors on the color wheel. I found reference photos of koi fish to design their appearance. I used a paintbrush and dabbed it to create the texture of the lilypads. In Chinese culture, koi fish symbolize a strong sense of character. I chose to use koi fish to correspond with the quote and title of the piece. This is my favorite quote because I  believe that people are always changing and growing. The dragonfly coincidentally also symbolizes change. The strong sense of character also correlates with always growing to become the best version of oneself. The movement in the water represents the movement in our minds and our growth.
