These interruptions may lead to tolerance, dependency, and eventually, addiction. The substance disrupts the release of the hormone dopamine, a reward response in the brain that gives off feelings of pleasure and satisfaction (usually from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, etc.). This release of extra dopamine is stronger than a natural cause, which leads to a higher significance of the substance over eating or basic functions that release dopamine. As the abuser continues to crave the intense feelings of pleasure, he/she repeats the substance, forming a habit that feels less pleasurable because the body adjusts to the dopamine. With the brain's normal functions already deterred, the abuser will keep increasing dosage each time to feel euphoria.
