This quote is saying that Jimmy Cross thinks that the reason of Ted Lavender being dead is because of him always thinking about Martha back at home that he doesn't realize that he's not being a leader to his soldiers and they are dying because of it. 

''In those burned letters Martha had never mentioned the war, except to say, Jimmy, take care of yourself. She wasn't involved. She signed the letters Love, but it wasn't love, and all the fine lines and technicalities did not matter. Virginity was no longer an issue. He hated her. Yes, he did. This quote is talking about how he felt after he burned those letters and that picture. He felt that he hated her and he doesn't want to think about her anymore. He thinks that she doesn't care and he hates her ''love'' and doesn't want anything to do with her anymore.
