Merchants benefited from the common language because it made it easier to sell and buy from the germans. The germans, sharing a common language, would have a more merged culture.

the Lutherans spread the protestant faith in the german states by using the printing press. The printing press helped mass produce teachings of the lutherans which spread to the unstable German states. Once the Holy Roman Empire divided most of the states are not apart of the catholic church so the lutherans, with the help of the reformation, spread their faith throughout Germany.

They had no common currency or uniform law

The german states didn't have a common currency unlike their language which caused problems. Germans would have a hard time going to a different state and buy something, because they had different currency. Germans also didn't have a uniform law because the rulers didn't care for their state only themselves.

Germany had a war that tore up and destroyed the land around it which made it hard to live there. the tiny city states were struggling the most so they decided to ally with either Prussia or the holy roman empire, the 2 biggest german city states. This caused Prussia and the H.R.E to start a rivalry over political dominance of the german stated.

The Italian states had periods of foreign control by spain and Austria.

The Italian states had foreigns control them for periods of time there were two major forces. Spain was one of the foreigners who controlled Italian states mostly the southern side of Italy. Austria previously the H.R.E was the other major force controlling Italian states on the Northern side of Italy.

There are many reasons why Rome was still the center of the roman catholic church. Because it was the most important pilgrimage site in the middle ages. Also because the pope of the roman catholic church at the time (Pope Boniface VIII) declared the first holy year.

Italy being todays cultural center of Europe was because of various reasons. Such as having one of the most interesting classical civilizations influenced Italy. A lot of different cultures are in the Italian states which made Italy gain and kept the position of cultural center of Europe.
