In the 1840s,expansion fever gripped the country. Manifest Destiny led to people using  a lot of trails like the Santa Fe Trail, and Oregon Trail to move west. The Mormon migration  happened when the Mormon community moved to Ohio and then to Illinois and then to Utah to escape persecution.
