Why I Chose This Piece

This piece of instrumental music is written by Omar Khairat. Omar Khairat is an Egyptian composer and pianist. I admire almost all of his work. His music makes my brain wonder off to a peaceful place where I think about nothing but only listen to the creativity behind the beautiful composition of the chosen notes.

This piece of music was used in a love movie named “Beware of Your Mind” by Adel Imam and Sherihan. This movie is about a psychiatrist who fell in love with a woman who had a mental disorder. Though out the movie he faces the difficulty of society’s disapproval of falling in love with a mental disordered woman.

I chose this piece because without words, it tells the story. This song has two forms: the first form start with a slow beautiful tempo that tells a story of love. The second form tells the story of love challenges where the tempo increases. Then it goes back to the first form, then to the second, and ends with the first form uncompleted. The fact that it goes back and forth between the first and the second form, shows the general idea behind love of how it will never be only beauty. This showed me that not because of her mental health that their love is challenging, but that love in general is challenging. Therefore, this piece of music can be applied to any love story, and that is why I like it.

Immersive Listening Focus Areas

1) Mood
Romantic, peaceful, heavenly.
Fear, rush, worry.

2) Form
Introduction form A: 0:0 – 0:10

Ensemble form A: 0:10 – 1:28

Ensemble form B: 1:29 – 2:48

Introduction form A: 2:48 – 3:04

Ensemble form A: 3:04 – 4:21

Ensemble form B: 4:21 – 5:47

Ensemble conclusion form A: 5:47 – end

3) Instruments
Piano, viola, violin, Kaman, riq, doumbek, cello, base

4) Timbre
bright, shiny.

Dark, dim.

5) Textural Layers
In the introduction, the piano played a monophonic layer. In form A, the texture was heterophonic. In form B, the texture is homophonic even though there are different melodies. These melodies are not playing together simultaneously. Since the tempo is fast, each melody has a short time to play in; that is why it might sound as if more than one melody is playing simultaneously.

6) Rhythm and Meter
The meter is 4 beats long. When the tempo increases, the 4 beats are counted faster.

7) Dynamics
The introduction of form A is piano. Then form A was mezzo-piano. Form B is mezzo-forte.

8) Favorite Thing
I am big fan of instrumental music with different forms where melody does not stay the same throughout the song. A lot of creativity are involved in them which makes them highly interesting.

9) New Observations and Comparison
When Omar Khairat played the introduction of form A the second time later in the piece, he played it at a different scale. Also, this piece remained me of the Indian music “alap” and “gat” when the music piece started monophonic without drums, then the drums came in later with the other interments.

10) Self-Discovery
This class really showed me the depth and the creativity behind music.
