Why, hello there! I am the Civil Defense Warden for Area B9! We Civil Defense Wardens make sure to maintain order and prevent chaos during specific emergencies. And that’s me! I am, after all, a highly trained professional, after my 2 and a half hour orientation course. I got a certificate and everything! At 25 years old, I consider myself very accomplished…okay, okay. My real names Freddy Wilcox. I don’t have a girlfriend or wife, nor have I ever really…had one. You see, I get really shy and flustered when it comes to females. I feel like I’m just a plain Joe when talking to a girl. But once I put my Civil Defense Ward helmet and uniform on, I feel as if I can do anything! Women seem to love a man in a uniform, and I’m hoping it gets me steady with a girl one day. It’s the magic of the uniform, I tell ya! Anyways, back to my job. Well, I’ve been a Civil Defense Warden for about...a week. Well, technically a month actually, if you consider when my boss just had me work in the office doing work like filing papers and cleaning the helmets and uniforms. I kept telling my boss that I wanted to go on an actual civil emergency, but he kept having me on laundry duty for the first month. Then, after the announcement of the end of the world, my boss suddenly runs in and tells my I’ve got the job! I was so excited, I danced and sang around my office! The end of the world isn’t my first choice for my first genuine civil emergency, but hey, we work with what we’re given. Anyways, I remember the first time I saw that "America Calling! Take your place in Civil Defense!" poster. I consulted the defense council, and after my orientation course I was official! Now, on to my hobbies and interests-oh…my other job? Well, uh, since I’m a hardworking man, I do have another job. At the…filling station. But, I only work Wednesdays and weekends! The rest of the days I am a Civil Defense Warden! My job at the filling station…well, I’ve worked there for about 2 years. It’s a really tiring job, as the windshields always need wiping, and the gas pumps are always malfunctioning. The reason I don’t like to talk about this job is because, well, I feel so average when wiping windshields and fixing gas pumps. When I put on my Civil Defense Warden helmet and uniform on, I feel like I serve an actual purpose and am contributing to the world! This is a secret, but I actually want to become a police officer. I’ve always dreamed of protecting citizens and taking down bad guys! This job as a Civil Defense Warden is one my preparations into getting there! Anyways, let’s move on to my hobbies and interests. First off, I love to sing! No really, I love singing and am pretty good at it too! I love singing karaoke at this diner called “Loose Kaboose.” You should come out and hear me sometime! Another hobby of mine is fishing. Fishing at a calm lake gives me a feeling of peace and serenity. I’ve caught a lot of fish before, but I just let them back into the lake where they belong. As for my greatest hobby and interest? Well, that’s of course protecting ordinary citizens just like yourself! My strongest influence in my life would have to be my parents. My dad, because he actually was a police officer. I’ve always looked up to him, and have always been so proud of him when he would tell me stories of his job! I knew from day one I wanted to be just like him. He’s retired now, but I hope to make him proud one day. I’m his only child, after all. My mother is a strong influence on me as well. She has always given me faith into not giving up on my dreams. She has given me a kind hear and the will to try. I wouldn’t be the Civil Defense Warden I am today if it weren’t for my folks! I’m tearing up just thinking about it! I actually live with my parents, which makes me feel embarrassed sometimes but I hope to move out one day once I am stable enough financially. They tease me about it sometimes, but I know it’s in good-nature. I just hope I can make them proud someday!

Noah is similar and different to me in many ways. First off, we both want
to be successful in life and achieve our dream jobs, as well as make our family
proud of us. We both are also a bit challenged in the, uh, social and romantic
department. We both can be a bit quirky and goofy at times as well. Our fathers are also cops as well, and our families mean the world to us. We’re different because Noah does not have an important job like I do! Also, Noah doesn’t try as hard to seem important or in authority like I do. He’s a bit more confident than me, I’ll admit that much. But, does he own a Civil Defense Warden helmet and uniform? No, he does not!

Location: Well, I live with my mom and dad.
We have lived in Hartford, Connecticut for as long as I can remember. We actually live a little outside the suburbs, so our house isn’t as perfect as a lot of houses, but it still is nice!

Country: Hartford, Connecticut.

Community: The Suburbs.

Which part?

Area B9! (The area I’M in the
charge of). The social class we live in is primarily the middle class.

Where am I? What surrounds me?

Well, as I’ve said before, I am at Mothers house in order to warn her about the end of the world. Her house is…well, it looks like just about every house on the street! The living room greets you first. There are two chairs, and a pale pink colored couch, along with a television positioned in front. Then, there is the chair that is reserved for the Father. There is a wooden hutch positioned on the back wall, along with tables and chairs set up in the right area of the house. I, unfortunately, am forced to sit on that couch, most of the time. There is a wooden table in front of me, with a tray of cookies on the top and the new (and really fun!) board game called “Scrabble!” I was almost tempted to play with it. When Mother rudely ordered me to take a cake to the kitchen, I had to see that too. Her kitchen is exactly what you’d expect it: yellow flooring, a stove with a red tea kettle, white cabinets everywhere you look, and a ceramic oval yellow table with 4 green chairs. There are pots and pans hanging on the wall, not a thing out of place. The house kinda have me the heebie jeebies! It was perfect…too perfect.

Year: 1955

Weather: 75 degrees, in the spring.
Ironically enough, the weather is “just perfect,” considering the end of the
world is approaching.

Time of day: The dinner party starts when the
clock is approaching 6:00. Just an hour and 36 minutes to go until the end of
the world…

Like I’ve said before, I’ve never really had a girlfriend…oh! Any type of of relationship? That I can do!

Mother: How did I meet this horrible, heartless, deranged madwoman? Well, due to my keen observation skills, I noticed that her house was the only one on the street crazy enough to have her lights on! So, naturally, being the good Civil Defense Warden that I am, I knock on her door to warn her that the world is ending TODAY! So that’s why we’re together. I was simply doing my job and trying to keep citizens like herself in order and calm, and you think she’d appreciate and listen to me, right? WRONG! She simply goes on with her “perfect” life, going on about how that even though it’s the END OF THE WORLD, she’s still going to have the “perfect dinner party”. I began to get annoyed by her, and she began to HATE me for trying to PROTECT HER. How could I tell? Well, out of nowhere, she goes from being this “perfect” mother to a RAGING DEMON WOMEN FROM HELL. She basically threatened to severe my hand and that, and I quote, “would not live to see the apocalypse with everyone else!” If that’s not a sign of being crazy, I don’t know what is. This women needs serious help! If she wasn't such a danger to my life, i would have handcuffed the crazy bat myself! (not that i'm allowed to do that...oh, how I wish I could!) She physically and emotionally tormented me, and held me captive at her house! I felt threatened and a bit frightened, and I STRONGLY DISLIKE HER. She threatened me! ME! A CIVIL DEFENSE WARDEN! She even called me a “little man”! I am not little! Now, the grandpa's nurse? That’s a different story…

Nurse Jane: Well, well. Where do I even begin with this one? Let’s just say, this nurse can operate on me any day! Oh God. That was bad, wasn’t it? I first met her when she wheeled in Mother’s grandpa as a surprise guest! I consider it fate. Well, when I first laid my eyes on Nurse Jane, I was instantly enamored by her figure-Err, I mean the sophisticated nurse outfit on her figure. It hit me instantly that both of our jobs share one thing in common: we like to help people! And, thanks to the magic of the uniform, she seemed to be enamored and charmed with me too! Finally! A women that I might actually have a chance with! Anyways, we hit it off pretty good…until it was revealed the world wasn’t ending. I realized I would have to take off my helmet and uniform, and I knew I didn’t stand a chance. However, she said that she likes grease monkey uniforms too! I even told her about that really big windshield I cleaned one time to impress her! I ACTUALLY DO STAND A CHANCE!

Little Sister: This obnoxious and deranged child! We met after Mother left to get me a chair. Suddenly this dwarf walks in, and when I first saw her, I thought I had gone crazy. Did Mother suddenly get shorter?! Then I realized that it was Mother’s daughter who is a carbon copy of her. Wanna know why I instantly disliked her? She called me…a GREASE MONKEY. YEAH. THAT’S RIGHT. A GREASE MONKEY. Does she have no respect for the office of the Civil Defense Warden? Another reason that I’m not fond of this child is because…she’s kind of…scary. She kept telling these
horrible stories, like how she once stabbed her teacher with a pencil. I wanted to do something about it, but I kept quiet because I feared she might...do something. I’m whispering right now because I really don’t want her to hear me! She is a demon child! She probably got those genes from her crazy mother. She actually seemed to not hate me though (phew!) because she told me that she
would still talk to me, even if I was a “grease monkey.” WHICH I AM NOT.

Son: I first meet Mothers son when he comes and greets me as “Freddy from the Filling Station.” I almost lost my authority there for a moment! Anyways, he seems to like me, and is nice to me unlike his deranged little sister. He seems like a nice kid, even though he had a tantrum and fled. I tried to console him, but he just ran away. I like him a lot better than his
sister, that’s for sure! Apparently, he’s into that delinquent Suzie Smith.
Best of luck to him.

Suzie Smith: This is a perfect example of the type of rebellious child we Civil Defense Wardens want to keep an eye on! She has this “good-girl” act and then she turns into a rebellious, juvenile delinquent! She started going on about she was going to “light some
fires, boost a car or two, lift some hubcaps, and knock over a soda counter!” I
do not like these types of rebellious teenagers

1. A housewife is attempting to host the perfect dinner party the same day as the end of the world. I add to the chaos as an uninvited guest (while attempting to prevent chaos.)

2. Before I knock on Mothers door, Mother is having a conversation with Little Sister and yells at her to go to her room and change. After I finally leave her house, the world continues on living and Mother, Father, and Little Sister watch television commercials. Meanwhile, I’m still
talking to Nurse Jane!

3. a.) The setting is described as a “stylized 1950's living room". The playwright does not specifically state the city of where the play takes place. As for the time, my OFFICIAL announcement states the end of the world commences at 7:36 PM. We can infer from this that the dinner party begins at around 6:00,
an hour and a half before the apocalypse.

b.) I am described as a man who is quite
serious about his duties (very true) because my regular job is…less than desirable (also true). I feel important when I don my CDW helmet! I am described as very earnest in my efforts, and am obviously holding on to order to fight off the chaos uprising in the room. As for education, got a certificate for completing the CDW two and-a-half orientation course! The playwright does not state my age or my family background.

c.) When I’m in my uniform, I appear to have a very authoritative personality and acting as if am very important
(which I am!) I’m constantly repeating my title of authority, and reminding people of their emergency preparedness positions: duck, cover, and remain calm! All of this shows that I am very earnest and serious in my job. However, as shown in some instances, I tend to reveal that I am a bit…well, weak. Such as when Mother is constantly yelling at me, I back down and you can tell I’m scared of her a bit. But can you blame me?! Anyways, sometimes my goofy traits show, and how I can be easily distracted. This is shown when I’m in the presence of Nurse Jane and her…derrière. But can you blame me?! The fact that I find myself in a situation where I’m scared to leave a house because of a scary
housewife threatening me shows that I am that assertive. Also, once my helmet comes off, and I talk about my job at…the filling station, I become more embarrassed and even a little sad. Nobody throughout the party is taking me seriously, and I am referred to as a “grease monkey” numerous times. This all shows that I have insecurities about myself and my life, but also am proud and earnest in my efforts as well.

d.) I am wearing my official Civil Defense
Warden Helmet and uniform!

4. Throughout the course of the events, I am constantly trying to keep order and discipline in the event of the apocalypse. I am ignored by everyone, and am verbally abused by that demonic housewife. I am forced to sit through this chaotic dinner party. I also develop a crush on a nurse, and eventually I silence everyone when 7:36 PM strikes. The apocalypse doesn’t happen and I leave with my potential nurse girlfriend.

5. The entire play occurs in one day, specifically the evening at dinner time.

6. The playwright left out most of my character’s past, so I had to create my characters backstory. In Part A is where you can see all the details and background of my character and his past. I had to imagine how his feelings and experiences reveal how he is now. When playing a character, I need to imagine the characters most raw and personal feelings so I can better understand their motivations and purpose in their actions. I like imagining things such as their dreams and things that are important to them, so I can feel the “spirit” of my character.
