Dwight is Rosemary's husband. He was kind, polite, old fogey until he married Rosemary. Then he showed his real personality. He is alcoholic, often violent, rude and selfish. He wants to show that everything in his life is perfect: Chinook is the best place in the world, he is an excellent shooter and a great musician. He wants the perfect family, that's why he woos Rosemary. She is a very beautiful but poor woman. She needs a man to depend on - a perfect housewife. However, her son, Jack is disobedient and a trouble maker. Dwight doesn't like Jack and wants to civilize him.

The only part of the story when Dwight feels something positive about Jack, is when Jack is going to have a boxing match at school with his enemy Arthur Gayle, organized by Mr. Mitchell, the gym teacher. Dwight is so excited, he trains Jack, giving him advice on how to fight. He feels proud that 'his son' will be fighting the 'sissy of the school'.

When Dwight sees that Jack has similar qualities to himself, he becomes more tolerant.

Another example for this is when Jack nearly cuts off his finger. He spends a week in hospital and gets addicted to morphine. When he returns home, he misses the drug and starts to steal Dwight's whiskey and waters it down. After a short time, Dwight realizes what Jack is doing but doesn't want to punish him. When Jack talks back, he punish Jack and he fell off, landed on his finger.

hi
Toby Wolff is a young boy, living with his mum, after his father left them. They was moving from one city to another, to find the life what they were dreaming about. Finally Rosemary married to Dwight, and moved to Chinook with Jack. He decides he will change. He really wants to be obedient, good student to make his mother proud, but it's hard for him. He always wants to look cool, so instead of learning he chooses hanging out with older boys, smoke, get drunk and make trouble.

This behavior causes a conflict between him and his schoolmate Arthur Gayle. They always say rude things to each other, but one day, after school at the bus stop they have a fight. Mr. Mitchell, the gym teacher sees it. nstead of punishing them, he organizes a boxing fight for the boys. Jack enjoys the attention what he gets during the fight, but he doesn't want to hurt Arthur. He can feel the pain everytime he punches [Arthur]. Inside they don't hate each other. They know they are similar.

Jack gets very disappointed when he gets letters from schools he wants to get in, but all of the answers are refusing. Some days later he gets a phone from Mr. Howard, who works for Hill School. He asks Jack for a meeting after school. Jack says him, he enjoys his classes, and it is true, but Mr. Howard thinks it also means he is doing well at school. Mr. Howard talks a lot about Hill School, and what he felt when he learned there. He is looking at Jack with a bigger interest, when he talks about the prep schools where his father and brother studied. At the end of the interview Mr. Howard says he is not sure Hill School is the best choice for Jack, but he will give him a good report.

Jack gets addicted to morphine when he nearly cut off his finger at school. First he wants it just for the pain in his finger, but after he needs it, because " for the peace it gave [him]". He doesn't think and worry about anything when he gets it. Returning home he misses this feeling. He starts to steel Dwight's whiskey to get back the feeling. When it turns out Dwight gets angry and push him, and he fells off on his sore finger. Rosemary wants to rescue his son from Dwight's violence, so she sends him to live with Chuck Bolger's family. Chuck's father is rigorous and Jack has to promise he will be on his best behavior and he really wants to be a good boy.

Rosemary Wolff was born into a rich family, as an only child. She had got everything what she needed. Her mother was her best friend, but his father (Daddy) was often too rigorous and punished her a lot. After she left Jack's father, she was trying hardly to ensure the best life for his son. She made new plans again and again about how to get rich. It is clear, she loves her son. Her circumstances are difficult, because she wants to be a good mother, but Jack is a trouble maker and liar, and she doesn't want to punish him.

She always becomes disappointed when she sees that Jack is becoming a criminal. When Jack has a boxing match, she is sickened because of the idea that Jack is going to "participate in such a cutthroat event."

Jack gets addicted to morphine in the hospital, and returned home he steals Dwight's whiskey. When it turns out Dwight pushes Jack, and he fell off on his finger, she has enough. It proves the last straw for her. She sends Jack to Seattle to live with the Bolger family and find a job. She promises if he is successful, they both will move to Seattle and start a new life without Dwight. Rosemary also promises the family, Jack will be on his best behavior, however she can just hope it will be true. She trust Jack again, she shouldn't do it...

- Jack was running a board through the table saw at school and joking around with the boy next in line. Then he felt a sharp pinch and looked down . Jack knows he wanted to make it up with him. Dwight already had a bad reputation in the camp, and to have one of his family leave his house like this would disagree him. Dwight knows Jack would tell people he had bullied him in his invalid condition.
- As Jack is leaving the house to go to the Bolgers, Dwight extends his hand and wishes Jack good luck. He hopeless to stop Jack, Jack shook it and wished him good luck too. But Jack didn't mean it any more than he did.
