The Miami Indians spoke Algonquian. This language is spoken primarily around Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and by some parts of the Mississippi River. They first documented the language in the 18th and 19th centuries by French missionaries. A person named Jacques Gravier made a dictionary of the Miami. This has helped people gather information about bringing back the language.

This is a dictionary of the language that the Miami Indians spoke. Their language was called Algonquian and a lot of different tribes spoke this language.

The Miamis seemed to have good relationships with other tribes and would trade goods throughout. As they continued to trade with the other tribes they grew wealthier, and as a result, they built European style log houses to live in, and also dressed in European style clothing. Although the Europeans had an influence on new ways of life, the Miami’s continued to follow their own traditions and maintain their active life as a tribe.
The Miami Indians settled near rivers like the Mississippi river, the Ohio River, and the Great Lakes.

This picture represents where the Miami Indians settled, along the major rivers in the midwest.

The men would wear pants in the winter. They would have crops, and the men would go hunting for buffalo. Their crops included corn, beans, and squash. The environment affected the Miami Indians because they could grow crops with the weather that they had.
