The children wanted a technology mascot for our early years centre. The children and staff brainstormed together, agreed on a character and a name for our early years technology mascot.

Rusty the Robot became part of our early years family, supporting us on our technological journey within Crosshill early years.

Tech in the great outdoors.

The tonie box is used as an alternative story telling method. Children can choose to listen to stories, songs or rhymes by placing a character on top of the box.

On our wellies walks we have been competing in Beat the Street collecting gems through the app earning points for our school.

South Ayrshire Digital Lending Library 

To support the digital provision offered within the EYC, orders are often logged with the SAC Digital Lending Library to loan resources. This often includes the 'Early Years Big Box' which is filled with age appropriate resources for coding such as BlueBots, Botley robots and Code-A-Pillars to name a few, and the EYC children also enjoy using the Indi Cars. These resources allow them to develop their computational thinking and digital resilience, as well as beginning to be introduced to computational language terms such as algorithms and debugging their code. It also allows them to begin to explore how toys work, and they can be involved in turning toys on and off and safely installing batteries – this is done with supervision from EYPs. 

We have looked closely at these pages to support our development of high quality digital learning experiences. We also have made reference to the pages about responsive and intentional planning, as this is an integral part of our planning, especially when planning digital experiences. 

Crosshill EYC have a X platform account where learning from across both the school and EYC is shared daily for our parents and carers to see their child/ren's learning. They also make use of Groupcall and XPressions to share information directly between school and families.

@Crosshill_PS is the school X platform. The EYC also use the hashtag #CrosshillEYC for parents to easily find the EYC's tweets. The parents in the EYC are also encouraged to share homelinks and wider achievements using the X platform and using the hashtag.

All technology used within the setting has been approved as 'safe for use' by South Ayrshire Council and all are GDRP compliant. Within the centre, children and adults can only access the internet through a secure council connection which has safe searches in places for staff and children. This is in place to protect children and young people from accessing anything which may cause them harm, hurt and distress. EYP's and other staff that work within the EYC ensure that they uphold the SSSC standards to professionalism when using social media for both personal and professional reasons.

To use the computational language of algorithms, the children explored the algorithm of following the Easter egg trail teeth. They realised that algorithms have to be completed in a specific order – so they had to follow the trail of the Easter bunny or they would not successfully complete the trail and find the eggs and the Easter Bunny.

The children are currently developing an algorithm for washing their hands and for brushing their teeth. They have came up with these steps by themselves, and we will put these steps on display by the handwashing sink to remind children of the steps they need to follow.
