What is closeness?

Closeness is when two or more musicians are mentally synchronized. This is when one musician is expecting another musician to give them what they want to hear, and they do. "Phillips was sensitive and straight to the point; he looked into his lead musicians and ensured his closeness to them." Ratliff Ch. 14. He uses this example to describe what goes on. Phillips felt what the leads wanted and gave it to them. I agree that this is an important element because if this didn't exist, musicians wouldn't be able to truly play together.

In the song Evil by Howlin' Wolf, I can feel that the drummer is giving what the singer wants. The singer isn't telling him what to play, but the drummer just knows. This is an element that is difficult to explain properly but its kinda like a gut feeling. The drummer, piano, singer, and harmonica know what the others are feeling.

"Sometimes the closeness between two musicians within a band is what makes the band capable of moving beyond normal limits" Ratliff Pg 165. This means all it take to become a better band is just to have some closeness. This element can effect the way they make music by simplifying the process. Its like when you're working on a project with someone that knows just as much as you, the projects moves on so fluidly and much quicker and better.

An example musical closeness would be when my dad and uncles get together and play music. Everyone has their own instrument and part. They all decide a song the sing and they just do it. Its pretty amazing to hear them play because of how they just kinda do it. The guitarist listens to the singer and gives him the chords he wants to hear. It seems so effortless but there is a lot going on.

During my time as a high school band member, a couple friends and I were in the jazz band. There would be times when someone would play a little tune by themselves and just about everyone else would join in. There was no communication between us besides the musical communication. We talked to each other through the music we were making.
