I think that Nationalism can be both good and bad because, loving your country is a positive thing. You value your country’s traditions and its history. But on the other hand, if you are not open minded to other countries and create conflict, then thats a negative. So, there has to be a balance, loving your country but also respecting the other countries.

In my opinion, nationalism can be both good and bad. This is because someone can support and value their country's beliefs and traditions so they are also known to the rest of the world. This would be good because people could think in a different way, and do every day things with another mindset. However, being fanatic about your own culture or religion, can result to catastrophe.

I think that Nationalism can be both a positive and negative thing. Living in a nation helps you understand your identity better and all your traditions rely on it. Sometimes though, you might be criticized based on your nation. For example if you're from Pakistan, people might think of you as a terrorist.

Nationalism has made the world a much worse place. BUT, it is still an unavoidable part of human evolution. The problem is we can’t let it go. Nationalism and isolationism worked once, when there was no traveling, internet or immigration. No free trade or contract manufacturing.
But this is the 21st century. Our knowledge has increased enormously and the internet connects people from all over the world. Many people don’t care anymore about countries’ borders as capitals, goods and information already move freely around the world.
But even today, GOVERNMENTS want us to believe that we need nationalism and separate countries are a good thing. This is actually not the case. I know many people don’t agree with me, but hang on there’s more.
All humans on Earth are actually the same race. We all have evolved from fish. The Earth is just a tiny tiny place in the Universe. And even today, when there's a huge amount of knowledge available and capability to move around the world, people are still focusing on nation borders rather than global futures and problems which not a single country or region itself can solve.
Also, almost all the wars have been caused by nationalism.
If you’re still not convinced, there’s more. Let’s imagine that from the beginning, people never isolated into tribes, but formed a global tribe, then city, then country etc. So basicly we would have been under one government since human evolution began. This would have not been possible due to human nature so this is a hypothetical scenario. But if this was true, we would be hundreds or maybe even thousands of years ahead of science and technology than we are now. So basically nationalism and isolationism only slows us down. And A LOT.
But although human nature is what it is, it doesn’t mean we couldn’t make change. In fact I’m sure we will have a World Government in 100–200 years. Nationalism is futile, we just need enough people to realize it.
So in conclusion, we need to give up nationalism. Globalization is clearly the way.

The fact that is positive is because people have their own identity and the others can tell which country this person is from. Also showing how proud of these group of people who is from being part of a specific country. The fact that is ALSO negative is, because of the fact that nationalism exist, there is more then one opinion in the world. There is no way that there will be no war in this world, and unfairness. People around the world has been judged by their identity and country they are from. There might be peace if nationalism doesn't exist, because everyone goes with the same rule and opinion.

Nationalism also can be bad, it can divide countries when it is extremely dangerous. There are many ethnic groups in a country, and each ethnic group has its own interest demands. When such interest demands are not satisfied, it is easy to set off ethnic separatist movements to split the country and form its own political power.

The positive things about nationalism is that you are patriotic and you stand up for your country. This has come in handy when smaller countries are under attack, whether physically or not. Greece is an example. On Oxi day, they stood their ground and against all odds pushed the Italians away, despite them being outmanned 10 to 1.
The negative parts of nationalism is that it can lead to an unhealthy pride towards your country. A good example of this is Germany during WW1 and WW2. They were told that the Arian race was superior to all others and that Germany should rule the world. This belief lead to millions of deaths worldwide, but certainly in Germany where they had concentration camps. They would put Jews there because they didn’t have blonde hair and blue eyes like the Arian race, but brown hair and brown eyes.

I personally perceive nationalism has a negative notion. The only way that I can think about nationalism in a positive way is when nationalism is meant as patriotism. That is to love and be devoted to your country, to be proud of you nationality. But also accept that all other people can have the same feelings for their one country. Contrary to this the idea of nationalism almost every time ends up on underestimating or downgrade the other countries. Such attitude can lead in movements of fanatics and serious conflicts between nations or even war.

The video states that today, people are fighting whether we should keep that kind of national identity or not. Many people believe that we should but others think that we shouldn't. My opinion about nationalism still hasn't changed. In my opinion, I believe that nationalism is a topic that is both positive and negative in many different ways. The positive thing about nationalism is that you know where you are from and you value your country's traditions and religion. On the other hand, I believe that nationalism can be negative because you might not have good relationships with other countries and that can cause war. Also, with nationalism people can be judged because of who they are, their appearance and because of how they act around people. The Guardian mentioned that because of stereotypes, the majority of people think that they should follow what their nation says and live by it. I believe that people should be the ones who chose what they want to follow regardless if other people don't like it. There shouldn't be conflicts and wars because of someone's opinion about something, they should have freedom to believe whatever they think is right for their living. Lastly, as I said above, people shouldn't be judged for who they are or how they act. We should all be equal! This could affect us in the future, and bring us closer to each other.

This made up myth built the modern world but it primes us for dictatorship, racism. For example, every person supports their country.

Nation identity is the myth built the modern world, but it also primes us for dictatorship, racism, and genocide. National Identity became the idea that language, race and borders should make the country. The identity of the nation got its authority from the people, not the government. Good nationalism is a certain specific solidarity based on the things you have created together, as a nation, and the things you aspire to create. It does not resort to abstract self-asserted values, fairness, tolerance that any nation could say about itself. It has concrete achievements that it can point to, whether of infrastructure or of living standards, and definable aspirations that it can work towards great things. Concludingly, nationalism is both good and bad. I rest my case.

According to New York Times, nationality is an illusion of what we consider our identity. It states that language isn't considered nationality, neither is the borders of your country. In the video, they used an example to justify this fact: Not so long ago, France didn't speak only French, it spoke many other languages mostly, yet it was still considered part of a nationality. A nationality needs to include religion, family, and clans. According to The Guardian, you shouldn't have to live up to a certain country's expectations. For example, if the president says "We have the strongest and biggest people in this country" then you shouldn't have to be strong and big. This is why, nationalism can lead to many conflicts, which is obviously bad. To conclude with, even though nationalism is very confusing up to this day and some people don't know how to identify themselves except of saying their identity, society should start to normalize characterizing themselves with their religions, what they like to do, and their family.

Additionally, one of the two sides of nationalism sometimes predominates. A society with a lot of positive nationalism is more likely to be tolerant and open toward the rest of the world because its people have learned the habits of good citizenship and social justice. In conclusion, sometimes nationalism can be either good or bad, depending on what the certain ideaology of a country or a person is.

According to New York Times, national identity, carefully enumerating all the things that people might take to be a nation’s essence and dismissing each in turn: It isn’t to be found in religious belief, language, race, “ethnographic politics,” economics or even geography (“it is no more soil than it is race which makes a nation”). Once he has pared all that away, Renan leaves us with little but the first part of his “essence of a nation,” that its citizens have many things “in common,” meaning, to my mind, the kind of nondivisive secular ideals found in the United States Constitution such as universal suffrage, due process of law and a guarantee that the government will pass no legislation “respecting an establishment of religion.”

I still agree with my opinion on Nationalism. I think that Nationalism can be both good and bad because, loving your country is a positive thing. You value your country’s traditions and its history. But on the other hand, if you are not open minded to other countries and create conflict, then thats a negative. So, there has to be a balance, loving your country but also respecting the other countries and their history. In addition to that, stereotyping countries and their people based on rumours is not correct. The country that the person is from does not define them. It adds to their unique personality. Each person is different. Knowing were you came from is important for you to understand yourself. As New York Times mentioned, we have the perception that France only speaks French, but that is false. A great example of this is France. During the French evolution, France didn't only speak French, but also many other languages, but people still classified it as nationality. Nationality is supposed to consist of religion/clans and your family. The Guardian mentioned that because of stereotypes, people believe that they have to live up to the other nations standards. Nationalism even though is not something bad, can create large amounts of conflicts. We all have to open up to other countries ideas of the world. It can bring us closer together. Lastly, if you remove your ethnicity, characteristics, etc, we are all the same. We are all human and should all be treated the same, and not get classified by others based on stereotypes that can be hurtful.

My conclusion from the article and the video, is that mostly nationalism turns to be a negative notion. A notion that leads to racism, to "humiliation of the outsiders", isolation within the borders of our country and many times to conflicts and wars. Also I agree with the idea that national identity is made up. It is the myth that built the modern world and divided people on the basis of common language, race, religion and borders.

Last time I accidentaly combined nationalism and patriotism. After watching the video and reading the article, I got more what nationalism actaully means. Looking back on it my original post did not explain my opinion at all. This video and article gave me a totaly diffirent view. So, to say my new opinion I think that most of the nationalism is bad. I think for a country to be succesful the citizens have to be patriotic but should not be very nationalism. Nationalism just stops globalism and without globalism every country has to work a lot harder. Nationalism also stops countries from helping each other.
