Common Questions Regarding the Abuse of Technology and These Ten Commandments:

-Why do you think these violations occur?
These violations occur very often because since students, and consumers in general, are behind a screen and not physically being watched, they feel as though there will be no repercussions to their actions. They think that everything is anonymous and untraceable, when in reality, with technology, it's the exact opposite. Almost everything is traceable and on top of that, nothing is truly deleted. People gain a false sense of power because they aren't confronted face to face with another person.

-What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?
It's hard to say what could eliminate these behaviors, I think that with the progression of technology, it will sadly just get worse. With more advancements in protection also comes more ways for people to figure out ways to get around those protective barriers and rules. I think educating students on technology should be a requirement for all ages throughout schooling. Again, technology is just going to keep progressing forward and students need to understand the safety and responsibility that comes with it.

-Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?
I think the computing guideline that students and consumers violate most often is commandment #5: Thou Shalt Not Use A Computer To Bear False Witness. I believe the main cause for this is social media. With apps such as twitter, facebook, instagram and even snapchat, information (especially false information) spreads so quickly. Students read the first source of news they see and assume it to be truth. Even news stations have clashing facts on the same story. I think that in the current world, that the fifth computer ethical commandment is the most often violated and many times not even on purpose.
