Difference between MRI, Pet Scan, and CT scan

A CT scan is a series of X-rays in "slices" through the body, which are then analyzed by a computer, and an image constructed from the data. A MRI scan uses magnets rather than X-rays to produce the image. The strength of the magnetic field causes the atoms of the body to respond, and the emissions are detected by the scanner, which are analyzed, and an image is produced. A Pet Scan uses radioactive positrons to detect differences in metabolic and chemical activity in the body. An area with increased activity will show on a colored image.

Why would a physician order one over the other test?

A physician would order a CT scan if he was looking to detect a tumor. It shows the physician the precise location of the tumor, its shape, and whether it is solid or hollow. A physician would order a MRI if they are looking for structural abnormalities of different organs, inflammation of soft tissue, and tears of muscle or ligaments. A physician would order a pet scan to diagnose potential cancerous areas. The pet scan detects excessive activity where it may be possible that cells are excessively multiplying.
