The Watergate complex was the headquarters of the DNC (Democratic National Committee). It was a also a scandal that involved President Nixon and the Nixon Administration. Nixon used unsavory ways in order to win his reelection. He feared famous celebrities and other powerful figures would ruin his chances of reelection so he harassed them with tax audits and more legal action. Hence the creation of the CRP (Committee to Reelect the President). The CRP however, didn't really help the president ethically or legally. The head created a "slush" fund to subsidize information gathering on Democrats. Then a plan was approved to wire tap , bug, the DNC headquarters at the Watergate hotel. The second time the burglars broke in they were caught and FBI suspected Hunt from the CIA. Hunt, as the leader of the "White House Plumbers", was let off the Hook from Nixon administration.
Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, journalist from The Washington Post, kept on the story. Because of their efforts the sandal exploded and the burglars as well as Hunt and many members of the Nixon administration were put on trial and prosecuted. It was later revealed that Nixon had his own office bugged with recording devices. He refused to had the tapes over citing executive privilege. Soon Nixon fired the attorney General and many others. He was endited among 6 others and the tapes were released revealing the president giving bribes, hush money, and showing his knowledge of the whole scandal. He was forced to step down and because of him many laws were created changing the American political system forever.
