Masters of War's tone is very assertive, with confronting lines such as "I hope that you die" effortlessly included by Dylan, adding also to the direct and personal nature of the song. There are hints of aggression, though it appears to be born from a foundation of sorrow and fear of the consequences of war. Overwhelmingly, the tone is critical of those who manufacture weapons and other items that contribute to the sustenance of war, especially with the intent of profiting from these business practices.

The focus of the song is to attack those who support and supply for the war. Through the lyrics, "When the death count gets higher, you hide in your mansion." This verse argues with those who supply funding and support for the war, showing their disregard for the loss of life. Discussing "mansion", presents the idea of those that are making profit off the war by supplying weapons etc. are spending the earnt money for their own benefit on things they don't need and are creating their own lavish lifestyle whilst others suffer.

There is a heavy focus on those who make money off the involvement in war. Bob Dylan is highly critical of their position and has a scathing tone towards them. Purpose is largely to communicate the horrors of the Vietnam War, and the atrocities companies and governing bodies attributed to.

This is similar to Owen's choice to expose the harshness of war and its reality. Bob Dylan is blunt in his depiction which is similarly seen in Owen's word choices.

The song 'Masters of War', the song responds to the government officials as well as business that make money from suffering from others. "You hide in your mansion" this shows wealth that many individuals carry, but just sit back and almost relax whilst people are fighting for their lives on the battlefield. Whilst Owens attacks the people who makes decisions on the battle front, Dylan attacks the individuals who control the war, through their wealth. Almost like how a ventriloquist plays with their puppet. "you play with my world
like its your little toy."

The situation of this song is that the higher ups of the war effort sending their men, who they see as numbers and not as people, to their death. Bob Dylan also talks about even his unborn children are sent to war through the governments threats and carelessness of they people in charge. This is shown through the quote "For threatening my baby, Unborn and Unnamed." Bob Dylan also talks about how that the higher ups build all of these "death plans" and still sit behind their cosy desks and offices, while people are sacrificing their lives for them.

This connects to Owen's poems through the subtle hints of attacking the government through carefully picked words scattered through his poem. The only difference between these two pieces is that Bob Dylan blatantly calls out the governments for their cowerdness while, Owens subtly attacks the government through examples and other constructed sentences.
