Crime is sometimes claimed as breaking the rules. Sometimes it can be around social norms, which in that case is Deviance. However, there are some times where deviance isn't really considered a crime. For example: if someone is saying childish insults at you or picking their nose, it's not really considered a crime. But if someone is brutally beating you up or runs up and break your property, that's considered a crime. Depending on the situation, there can be a relationship or differences between Crime and Deviance. The law can be changed at any point, so what might be a norm at the moment could be mandatory in the future.

Crime is committing something that’s against the law and getting punished by the authorities as a result. Deviance is behaving in a certain way that is breaking society’s norms and rules. An example of deviance would be is sleeping in class which isn’t allowed in many schools and would get called out for it but it’s not considered a crime. An example of crime would be identity theft which is stealing someone else’s identity against their will and getting arrested for violating their consent. Our understandings of crime and deviance subjective and subject to change over the course of time because when someone does something that society disapproves of, they end up creating laws for everyone to follow so they don’t get ostracized for breaking society’s norms.

In society, crime is listed as deviant activity due to criminal actions being outside of acceptable social norms. Even though crime means deviance, deviance doesn't always mean crime as deviance can be something small like eating a piece of food off the floor, acting childish/immature despite being an adult or talking to yourself which while some deviant actions are considered strange and others meant to break some rules, doesn't mean they're criminal. However actions that are meant to harm others like assault or provide a threat like carrying dangerous weapons are considered crimes because other people either will or do get hurt in the process. Overtime, both terms often correlate with each other to the point where they mean the same thing, breaking social rules. Though it's important to learn the difference; Deviance means odd but not dangerous, while crime means nothing but danger.

The relationship between crime and deviance is rooted in societal norms. Typically, we view people who violate norms and alienate them because they do not follow our unwritten rules. Although acts of deviance are not illegal, they are shamed upon and are viewed negatively as weird or unnatural. As we grow older, we begin to get a better understanding as to why people act or do certain things in a certain way, and our opinions on what the norms should be begun to change. For example, as children we have been taught that smoking is bad and that if we were to smoke, we would go down the wrong path. This causes us to stay away from people who smoke in fear of getting in trouble, but later as adults we understand the different reasons why someone might smoke. An example of a crime is murder, which is “the unlawful killing of a human being with malice.” Being considered one of the worst crimes, murder is the loss of another person's life, faces moral convictions and goes against the law. The relationship between crime and deviance is that those who typically engage in deviant acts, often also end up committing crimes as they have no fear in judgement and do not care about the norm.

The relationship between crime and deviance is how they both can be a bad thing and there can be consequences. But just because something is deviant doesn’t make it a crime. A crime is assaulting a lady because you wanted to. Being deviant is being a part of a movement or protest that goes against assaults and raises awareness. The protest/movement itself isn’t a crime but the fact that people are rioting and speaking up instead of letting “justice” run its course is seen as deviant.

The relationship between crime and deviance is that normally people associate deviance with being bad and when you think of things being bad it can also relate to crimes. While devance is a very broad range referring to society's norms it is neither good nor bad. As a society we typically tend to associate deviance with doing something wrong although it’s not correct to do so. Crime however is not following the law’s put in place by the government. Our views on crime and deviance are bound to change with the course of time simply by the evolution of our culture. An example of a crime back in the 1800’s was women not being able to vote. With time came change as you can see now in today’s society women have the ability to vote. An example of deviance is putting ranch on pizza. This is not a typical thing for people to buy in stores, this makes it not a normality for society therefore being classified as deviant.

Crime and deviance can be similar but are entirely different which is important to acknowledge. Crime is going against the law while deviance is an act that's not normalized. Crime is considered as theft, homicide, drug use, etc. while deviance could be having pineapple on pizza, trimming your nails in public, or even staring at someone for so long. Over the course of time, our understanding of crime and deviance changed due to modernized social norms and it becomes situational. Back then, protesting was overly judged and wasn't ideal to be in. However, nowadays, protesting is commonly used worldwide without any "nasty looks". When it comes to crimes, it becomes very situational. Sometimes people break the rules because they have to. For example, a woman steals from a grocery store because she has no money to feed her children.

Crime and Deviance are related but are certainly not the same thing. Deviance is an act that goes against the mutuality of a group, it is the violation of societal norms. Crime is an act of deviance. It is also a violation of norms but since it violates official law, it is strictly punished. Unlike acts of deviance, which are not really punished. Examples of deviance include picking your nose during a meeting, dancing or even talking in class while the teacher is teaching. These actions are small and don't violate official laws. Therefore, an individual isn't harshly punished for them. Examples of crime include robbing a bank, jaywalking, shoplifting etc. All crime is deviance but not all deviance is crime. Individuals make these unusual decisions because of their own morals and thoughts. They are still influenced by society however, and there is a time and place for everything. Throughout time, we have seen protests, peaceful protests, petitions and many more techniques that were all conisdered acts of deviance because they were not "mutual" and "common" among people. A similar situation can be said with weed, marijuana used to be illegal up until recently. What’s considered a crime also depends on regions. In countries governed by Islamic law you can go to jail for adultery, whereas here in the U.S. it is not punished by the government and it is only seen as an act of deviance. What’s considered a crime is usually dictated by your government and enforced by law officials and citizens. Overtime there has been a confusion between both whether they are the same thing.
