For those who have already signed up, the only thing we need to do right now is get current with all the payments. Below is the payment schedule:

Deposit- $150 was due by Monday, August 26th (So, as soon as you are able)

Advance- $762.50 due by Monday, September 23rd (Next Monday)

Amtrak - $364.00 due by Monday, October 21^st - This is a hard date, if you are planning on going, I need you on this train!

Balance- $762.50 due by Monday, February 10th, 2025

General Information for those considering going:     

     The dates for this trip are July 13th, 2025 - July 27th, 2025. This includes 1 day on each end for travel by train to New Mexico, one day at each end at base camp, and 10 nights on the trail. The main activity here is backpacking. Each crew will select their trek from the 34 options available, ranging from "Challenging" to "Super Strenuous". We have reservations for 3 crews, that can consist of 8-12 individuals. There must be a minimum of 2 registered leaders per crew, and there must be more Scouts than leaders in a crew.

REQUIREMENTS - Scouts need to be 14 years old OR be 13 and have COMPLETED the 8^th grade. Adults need to be 21 years of age or older, and there must be at least one female leader in any crew with female Scouts. All participants need to meet the BSA height/weight requirements as specified on Philmont's website. There are additional requirements for leaders as well, such as Wilderness First Aid/CPR, and several online courses. If you are considering participating in this high adventure, it is a get up each morning, pack up camp, hike at elevation, set up camp, cook meals, participate in the program activities, and....., repeat, for 10 days. It is as mentally challenging as it is physical.

     There will be additional charges to include meal expenses during our travel days and $50 for the round trip bus from Raton, NM to Philmont Scout Ranch. For families looking to partner with the Korotenko Campership Fund for financial assistance, please see your respective Scoutmasters or the fund administrator Steve Kohn. Philmont is one of the premier Scouting experiences and is an awesome time. Please reach out with any and all questions.

     I would like to hold a meeting for all those attending the Philmont high adventure, on Monday, January 13th, at 6 pm at the church. The main focus of this meeting will be Trek selection. Each crew will need to meet and come up with their top 6 choices for their trek. We will submit these on the 16th, with the lottery being held on February 14th. There are 24 options available for the 12 day treks, ranging from Challenging to Super Strenuous. I have attached the link to the 2025 Itinerary Guidebook. Please have your Scouts start taking a look, each trek is broken down so that you can see everything from the mileage per day to the programs offered. Usually, the harder the hike the less time there is for program activities. Keep this in mind, as you balance how far you want to hike with what you want to do on the hike. Please reach out with any questions, I'll send a reminder out as we get a little closer to the 13th.

On Monday we'll be riding our bikes from the church to Dairy Queen in Wasco, eating ice cream, and riding back.  There will be quite a few of us, so we need everyone's help to make this safe and get us back to the church by 8:30.  The weather looks hot in the mid-80s so a water bottle is a good idea.

1. If you want a Blizzard, please fill out this pre-order form before Sunday at 5 PM so I can roll up the order and submit it Sunday night.  DQ is giving us a significant discount this year, so the prices have actually decreased.  This allows us to round all of the prices to the nearest dollar and still save everyone money (so the prices look a little wonky on the order from... but they are correct).  Please bring the cash for Blizzard orders to the meeting, and we'll collect at the church.  IF you don't want a Blizzard, just order and pay at the DQ counter when we get there and they should give you the discount.

2.  HELMETS are required.  If you have a spare helmet, please bring it for the Scout who will forget his.  Bonus points if the spare is a pink unicorn helmet.

3. Bikes only.  No motors, no scooters, no skateboards.  This keeps us all together.  Please make sure the bike is in good shape.  Lights are a good idea as the sunset will be at 8:15.

4. Arrive early ~6:50 .  We'll assemble the group in the lower parking lot.  It takes some time to get the money collected, bikes out of cars, and everyone counted.  If you are running late, let someone know and we can make accommodations.

5.  Leaders:  We'll need a few that can ride with the troop, someone to drive ahead to DQ with the money, and a couple on-call to pick up anyone and their bikes that can't continue.  The pick-up crew should be 2 leaders in a large vehicle.  Email me if you want any of these jobs.

Welcome to August!  There are a lot of events to talk about in this email so I'll try to be concise.  Before I start on this week's activities, please note the mandatory climbing forms and Eagle Court of Honor invitations at the end.

Monday 8/4/25: Patrol Elections and National Night Out prep.

• Class B uniforms (still a little longer).  

• If you want to be a Patrol Leader for the next 6 month term, think about how you can convince the members to vote for you.

• Some second-year Scouts have asked to merge their two patrols (Patriots and Griffin Gunwielders).  This seems like a good idea to me, but we'll talk about it.

•

• We'll have an Eagle Award and summer camp awards to hand out.

Summer Camp and High Adventure Selections:

It's time to choose where we go next summer.  For summer camp, both troops will meet together on 8/11.  Scouts will present camps that they found online or have been to and are interested in attending.  Then everyone votes on them.  This will be announced at tomorrow's meeting, but I wanted to give Scouts extra time to think about it.  My only requirement is that the camp is less than a 7 hour drive from the church.  A high adventure meeting is TBD.

Important Forms - As a reminder, we require every participant (climbers and attending spectators/chaperones alike) to complete these two forms no later than one week before your trip:

Summer Camp Selection:

Both troops will meet together in the church Fellowship Room to choose where we go to camp next summer.  Scouts will present camps that they found online or have been to and are interested in attending.  Then everyone votes on them.  Adults will then explore reservations at that camp. My only requirement is that the camp is less than a 7 hour drive from the church.

Wiffle Ball / Kickball:

Following the summer camp presentations, there will be a troop-wide kickball game.

Uniforms for the night will be Class B.

If you took home a Dutch Oven from National Night Out, please remember to return it.

Campout Prep:

We'll be menu planning and picking grubmasters tomorrow.  Please bring the $15 for food.  There will be a Golden Spoon competition for Saturday's dinner, so bring some good ideas!  With school starting, the uniform will be Class A.

Climbing Prep:

Experienced Scouts will be teaching some of the skills that we'll be using on Saturday such as the climbing knot and procedures.

If you took home a Dutch Oven from National Night Out, please remember to return it.

Remember, there is a wild animal behind bars in everybody. The wild animal is your tongue and the bars are your teeth. 

If your tongue is not trained, it can cause a lot of trouble, not only for yourself, but for those around you. Keep those bars of teeth closed until your tongue is so well trained that you know it won't harm anybody.

Your wild animal can make trouble by bad-mouthing other people, by using gossip and slander, and by making wisecracks at the wrong time. Train your tongue so that it knows the right time to speak and the time to keep quiet. Until you have it fully trained, keep that wild animal behind bars.
