Similarities

There are some similarities between this Cinderella and the Cinderella we know nowadays. These similarities can include the Oppressive Stepmother and Stepsisters who mistreat Cinderella. Another similarity is the magical help element. In Basile's version, there's a bird who helps her out and in the version made by Charles Perrault, it's a fairy godmother who grants Cinderella's wishes. One final similarity is the Prince/king interest. The king in this fairy tale and prince in Perrault's story both fall in love with Cinderella.

Differences

Along with similarities, there are differences. With the ball and the prince, the prince plays a more passive role in the Italian version by Basile while in the modern versions today he is more active as he looks everywhere to find Cinderella. With her transformation, Basile emphasizes on Cinderella's nurturing actions while today's versions focus more on the external magic received by fairy godmother. Another difference finall just comes down to the names. In the more modern versions her name is just Cinderella. But in Basile's version she is named Zezolla.

The moral of the story is that her virtue is rewarded. Zezolla's kindness and patience lead to good and reward. While on the other hand, cruelty and evil are punished. This may teach others that a good character can lead to a prosperous life even when you may face adversity.
